Kris--I'm not a Saxon hater--LOL!! I use it with my oldest (7th grade) she likes it and I like it. My middle dd (6th) HATES it --seriously hates it. She will be in TT. And 5th grade dd is in Horizons.
It all just depends on the kid and what works.

Teaching Textbooks is $184.90. That's what I'm going with for Geometry next year. Plus, it doesn't get discounted ANYWHERE! However, it you buy the "complete set" from the publisher, the shipping is free. Because they're relatively new, they are not easy (but not impossible!) to come across used. Right now, I'm a little miffed with the company. They were at the Homeschool Conference in Columbus. I wanted the book only. Not only was it not discounted at the conference (so many other companies do!), they did NOT have anything there for me to buy. I had to order it, AND they charged me $10 for shipping! I'm use to other companies giving free shipping for anything ordered at the conference, and have come to expect it! I'm going to complain about that!

I use Horizons until 4th grade, then Saxon until they're ready for Algebra or pre-Algebra. I don't mind Saxon!

Jackie, how come you aren't using Saxon for Algebra or pre-Algebra?

Two reasons. First, Saxon doesn't teach geometry seperate. It's somehow integrated into the rest of its upper level math. Second, Carl had some discarded math books from the public school. We went with that for both pre-Algebra and Algebra. The pre-Algebra worked very well. And for the most part, so did the Algebra. But we had arrived at the limit of my math knowledge. I wanted something that could explain it to her when I couldn't. That's why we're swtiching to Teaching Textbooks. I MIGHT have been able to teach Geometry using the same book, but there's no way I could do Algebra II, Trig, or Calculus.

Carl did look at Saxon for upper math, and wasn't impressed. And he's a math teacher, so I relied heavily on his opinion.

We're planning to do two math courses next year: Video Text geometry, and also A Beka's Consumer Mathematics. We saw both of these at our state convention. Geometry with a teacher on DVD will be a welcome change, and the consumer course from Abeka looks super-practical! I expect to learn a lot from it, myself! It covers taxes and fees, insurance, salaries and commissions, balancing a budget, Social Security tax, Federal Income tax and tax returns, compound interest, insurance, and assets and liabilities of a small business.

We've "done our time" with Saxon.

Also, too many things that seem like 'school' or are too workbooky.

Is that not good? Do you feel your children would not get as much explanation for geometry if it's integrated in? Just curious as I'm still trying to figure out what to do for math next year. Usually I'm all set by now. In fact, if I could afford it, I'd already have the TT for both my younger two, but as it is, I'm still figuring it all out....

Jackie, do you think vegsource is a good place to try to sell my Videotext? If I could sell that, then I'd be able to get TT.

I loved geometry! I loved doing proofs, and probably feel the way about proofs that you feel about diagraming sentences. It's a matter of learning logic step by step. I feel that much of the proofs are what's being left out of geometry. That's why I want it taught as a seperate subject.

As far as Vegsource goes, I suppose it would be as good a place as any to sell. Did you try homeschool classifieds? I'd try there first. Or even HSLDA's board.

Deena, you used Video Text for algebra. Why not for geometry?

Well, I probably wouldn't want to spend that much on it because by the time it got to the Algebra II area, it was not as clear, and dh had to help ds a LOT! Of course, my oldest admits that math is NOT his thing, but still, I'm not sure how clear the Geometry would be!

Actually though, ds took Geometry from BJU last year, because he did the BJU program.

How high does TT go? Does it have Geometry (I'm being lazy and not checking on-line)?

Obvously TT has geometry, because that's what Rachael's doing next year! LOL! There's also Alg.II, but I don't know if there's anything more advanced than that, or if there's not, if they're planning on doing more.
