As far as the bagless vacuums, not for me.

I don't take the newspaper, we recycle the plastic bags from the grocery, and as many containers as possible either here or by putting them in the recycle bin, ditto cardboard and printer paper.

I don't feel guilty adding that vacuum bag to the land fill.;)

Miele is the name you were searching for. I've also seen it spelled Miela. Not sure if it was a typo or what.

Ok...update. I was all set to purchase the top of the line Oreck. I called my local vacuum repair shop and asked the guy if the Oreck was worth the money and he laughed and said well...they have to pay for all that advertising and such...how much do they want? When I told him $800 he laughed and said well...I don't think so. Anyway...I chatted with him and asked him about the warranty and the service package that came with it and if it was worth it and...he said the annual service, sure but...most things that are covered under warranty tend to break within the first 6 months. He told me he had a used Oreck for $150 for sale at the shop if I had my heart set on one.

I told him I wanted something that would suck all the stuff out of my carpet. He said the brush on the Oreck is good but...other than that he said it's just not $800 great of a machine. He said you can get a really good machine for under $500. So...I said ok...tell me what I should get?

BTW he said stay away from the Dyson's. lol Just thought I'd let you all know that.

The one I got is a Sanitaire. I think it sounds like a turbo prop inside it. My son says it's quieter than the other one. I don't think so...but I figure it must be a different pitch. http://www.aaavac.com/Eureka/s647a.htm

Basically the fan that runs inside it to create the suction is like 3" diameter on the Oreck and this one is at least 6" diameter. I couldn't see how much dirt was in the bag after I tested it on already clean vacuumed carpet but...it definitely felt like there was a fair amount in the bag. The bag I got basically makes the vacuum something like 4 or 5 times filtration.

Only downside thus far seems to be the head on it is slightly higher so...I have to approach certain areas under hangouts differently but...other than that...she seems to suck pretty hard.

It's not super easy to push like those with the built in self propelled but...if it sucks all the junk out of my carpet...I'm ok with the extra workout.

We have had a Dyson for two years and are very happy with it. I am amazed by how much it sucks up. My husband has asthma and my son is pre-asthmatic. The Dyson has really helped with preventing breathing problems.

    Alrighty..update to my craziness. ROFL

I took the vacuum back. It hurt my hand when I vacuumed and it was tough to push, no attachments for baseboards, the light on it was too high to get under my built in bookcase and...seemed like one other things I didn't like.

But...I was impressed with the suction power. I got a Sanitare canister and hopefully it will solve all the things I didn't like. The brush on it has a shut off switch for doing bare floors which is great and the brush has it's own motor to really spin the brushes. I want CLEAN carpet. lol

So...I'll keep you updated. My plan is to really test it out tomorrow by vacuuming the whole house.

ok, I have a red dirt devil style, supposed to be featherlite or something.
supposed to be quiet, not really as good as it says.
It sucks really good at 12 amps though and though I have broken the stand up by itself mechanism, ( okay so I am really hard on vaccumes) it still vaccumes fine.
it has attachements, 2, plus length for hose to reach my celing, I have an old home so lower than our huge ones of today.
Oh , and I am sorry but I only know how much Cheap vaccumes are , liek 59 dollars on sale!

Krista, my mom had an exlecrtolux, its not all its cut out to be either... my sis has it as her down vaccume more than not and she has like three different ones of various shapes and sizes Lol!

I'm glad I stumbled across this post. My dh thought he was being nice when he purchased me a shop vac for in the house use. OK. True, it will pick up just about anything. It does however leave a half-inch thick pile of dust over everything.

I recently asked him to buy me a regular vac. He said I didn't need one because the shop vac worked just fine. That is until he used it and seen the dust just flying out of it. I now get to go to Wal-mart and find one. I had been thinking of buying a bagless, but you guys got me to thinking. I will go with the $40 cheapo.

Oh my. I couldn't imagine using a shop vac to vacuum the house.

I'm pretty darn happy with the vacuum I finally decided on. Today I took the carpet beater part off and used the pole and the brush with suction to clean off the top of doorways, ceiling air vents, hard to reach high spots in general. Worked like a charm!!!

It really does a great job on the carpet as well. I like to know that I vacuumed and see all those tracks. ;) Then with the flip of the switch in my hand I move to bare floor vola! Yep...I'm keeping it. Oh and it is quieter than the upright version.

We have allergies around here and the more I get out of the house the better. We are pretty much just allergic to the trees, grasses, etc...that grow outside. Not the horrible problem some have with dust mites - thank goodness.

So...anyway...thank you all for your help and I hope that shopping helped you in some way. lol

I bought a dyson today!!!!! I've been looking at them and waiting until the price came down. I got it $350 less! My sister has one and just loves it. I also have a kirby and I like that too but this is for in our fifth wheel and when at home to keep on the main floor and the kirby upstairs. This is replacing my bissel (I previously posted dirt devil -oops). I didn't like it. Bags or no bags is not an issue for me, as long as it works good I'm happy. Yay!!! I can't wait to vacuum tomorrow!

I agree. The vacuum I had before my Dirt Devil required bags but it worked sooooooo much better than the vacuum I have now. I bought my Dirt Devil because I didn't want bags anymore. Now I wish I bought the same type of vaccum as before.

Congrats! I bought a Dyson in March and I love it!!! I used the 20% coupon from Bed Bath and Beyond and saved about a $100....gotta love that. Why did I wait so long to get rid of the old one that sucked (and not in a good way, kwim).

ok since this was re opened, I need a cheap canister vac myself
our Dirt Devel featherlight broke a belt and the beatter bar went crack too! I like the kind with bags, as it keeps the dust down when you empty it! I am allergic to dust and my carpets need one today!
We were looking at a hoover and a bissell, both brands I know are good.
under a 100 dollars as I know that even the expensive ones break down and these are much easier to replace!< My mom had electrolux she spend hundreds $$$ on and it broke as quick as the cheap dirt devel she bought, so my sis has been using the cheap one and it works just fine!
LIght weight is good too cause then I can lift things easier to get ceiling and so can kids!

I loved this thread, I am it was posted. Thanks I have been looking into a new vac. My mom bought a refurbished Oreck from harbor Freight for $80 and loves it. I have my Grandmother in laws old Hoover. It is way over 20 yrs old. I am having a hard time finding bags for it. It seems to work fine. I need to get something that will suck the metal chips out of the carpet. (We have a CNC Mill in the shop, and are starting our own business so we have lots of chips everywhere. )

I have a Bissel Powerforce and am very happy with it. No bag and it has, I think, 5 filters that are all washable. I've only had it since Oct but have been happy with it so far. I only paid $45 for it in Walmart and its night a cheapy lightweight thing either.

No I don't want a shop vac, just something for the house that will pick up the things that get tracked inside. The metal chips are little, think of when you drill a hole the little bit that comes out, maybe even smaller sizes. When we are working we get them all over our clothes, hands, hair, they get embedded in our shoes etc. Just a mess. We try really hard to get it all shaken and dusted off but still we get a mess. I would love to get an enclosed machine which would stop a bunch of the mess, but an expensive vac is way cheaper then that. :)

I do need shop vac for the shop though.
