Wow! The last district I worked in had security cameras everywhere. I would think something would have been caught on the tapes. Where were the teachers/librarians? This is so sad and really makes me glad we pulled our kids out when we did!

I am.... I don't know what to say. That's AWFUL.

The emotional scars left by having to write her attacker an apology letter breaks my heart.

I don't think this could have been handled any more badly by the school district.

Sad to say this kind of thing goes on alot all over. I think schools need more cameras and men and women trained in compassion.

You know, I was thinking about this last night, and have decided the problem lay as much with the parents as the school. I assume the girl told the school first. But what did the parents do when they found out? Did they follow up with the police, or expect the school to do that? And when the school decided the girl was lying, did they believe that, or (knowing their daughter) did they have her examined by a doctor? And there is NO WAY IN HELL I would have allowed my daughter to return to that environment, regardless.

Now, I STILL hope they nail the school's butt to the wall, but I feel the parents failed their daughter miserably.

For the first incident: The parents were not told about the incident until she was expelled. By then it was a couple of weeks later and too late for an exam. The problem at that point was that the officer they called told them the school had already determined that the girl was making it all up. Case closed. There is a separate investigation into the officer's response. But it's generally held that the school is a legal agent and the officer was not out of line to take their word on it.

The second incident: the parents did notify the police immediately. The girl had not told the school of the second incident at the moment it happened because she was afraid she'd be expelled again. But she told her parents when she got home. They did take her to the doctor and file a police report. There is a concurrent criminal case pending against the boy. Which is what led to this case against the school.

You know if my child were in that situation, God help the little man who did it number one. And number two why would you send your child back to the school where the same little cretin attended?

I think that's a whole different conversation. lol. That's a question that, really, only a homeschooler would ask.

So the school didn't report it to the parents right away? (OK, I'll back off in my complaints about the parents, even though I wouldn't have made her go back there!). The parents should have been called in IMMEDIATELY. If it were true, the parents needed to be there. If the girl was lying, the girl needed to be there. What did they do? Say, "You're lying; go back to class!" And a few weeks later, they have an expulsion hearing? If it's an offense that leads to expulsion, the parents need to be informed IMMEDIATELY.

That's the impression I got from everything that's been on the news. Who knows what of it is true, but that seems to be the progression of events as laid out by the reporters.

    I agree!

Still, I hope the parents win their lawsuit.

They want to know why we won't send our kids to school. God help the school that ever done my child that way. Having a special needs child myself that would do anything to please someone really makes me want to blow a gasket to hear this. That is sorry, low down, and just plain STUPID of the school. I'm sorry I'm being so mean but when you mess with children the MEAN comes out in me. Special needs children have enough problems going on in their lives without the stupidity of people whom they are suppose to be able to trust.
