On a show about saving energy there was a really cool hand held device that you turned on ans when you walked into a room, it told you the kilowatts per hour you were using. Anyone know what that might be?

Can't have an outdoor clothesline here either. Can't hang stuff on the deck or front porch because it's visible to others. We don't have a basement or large enough room to hang out clothes on a rack except one that's carpeted. That'd wreck the carpet, wouldn't it (water dripping as the clothes dry)?
Deena, when you put your clothes through the spin cycle, it should spin dry your clothes enough that there isn't any water dripping. Maybe you could try it and see if it works. I'm getting a clothes line next spring!!!
Jennifer, my dh just went out to the meters (we have 2) to see if they were spinning fast. He wanted to know why the one was spinning when he had the TV off I told him we have a refrig., a freezer, the computer, and anything that has LCD numbers on it. Hmmm, he said, just don't unplug my vcr's/dvd's. LOL Things that are important to men. I'm going to tell him about this gadget and maybe he will want one - if it's in the budget
I agree with OhioMom. Once the clothes have been through the spin cycle, using a drying rack would be fine. I have a friend who uses one on carpet just fine.
This is exactly what my sister does. I like to hang my jeans in the garage, in the hotter season. They shrink less and dry fast.
Same here in California. Now the type of fence is another story. The fence has to keep children out and be approved by city inspectors.
I would love to have a clothes line, though we are not allowed either. I think I mentioned it in the Simple Living thread. Neighborhoods here don't allow it, their only reason is if a child is running through your yard they might get 'clotheslined'. To which I say, "They shouldn't be in my yard unless invited!"
No Privacy You must be approved to have a pool, they will inspect your property and let you know if you are allowed to have one. Then they will also tell you you MUST put up a fence, which must be inspected by them also and they will tell you if you are allowed to have one. What if you have pets? They run loose around the neighborhood because noone puts up fences because it is such a pain to get approved. We chase neighbors dogs quite a bit around here, catching them for them before they get hit. Otherwise their dogs are on chain outside, only while they are home, otherwise you will get the cops called on you. Then we are so blessed to hear your crazy dog bark it's freakin head off because it's on a chain out in the hot sun with no water...but you are home, so their is nothing anyone can do. If you neighbors yard is messy then you deal with it, complain to the board members, or tell your neighbors to clean up their crap. If you mow the lawn in the nude, you may possibly get the cops called on you, their are enough living in this neighborhood that they should be here in about 1 min. If you intend to mow in the nude the best time is during the day when most people around here are at work, just be sure to not mow it before 8am or after 8pm, as you will then get the cops called on you for that also.
Nellie just a thought but instead of a clothesline are you permitted to put out one of those old fashioned clothes poles? It's like a giant back yard umbrella only it has clothes lines on it to hang clothes..this way there is not worries about children getting clotheslined! Since it's a pole.....I mean I assume you have street lights so if you can't have a pole they should remove their street lights! LOL sorry it's just the way I think!
NO WAY! No clothes poles because those would have a metal pole and may rust over time! But...it's ok to have those basketball hoops that have metal poles in your driveway! Which are more seen than a clothes pole in your backyard. :roll: Though I did find one that was plastic and I would have to set it up every day. I wonder if it would be sturdy or not.

Nellie I just remembered something that my dad did once to set up a badminton net for me....but I think it would work for a clothes pole (even a plastic one) Get a large bucket (like you find at home depot the big I think 5 gallon ones) and fill it with concrete then when the concrete is in put in the clothes pole and let it dry with the pole in the middle. This way it's portable, and not permanent!
