It makes me uneasy for someone to be parked outside of my house. There was a guy parked outside our back gate which he had full view of our yard. I went out to see if there was something he needed, as I approached, he was shoveling horse poop out of the back of his horse trailer on to the street. I asked him to stop because he was doing this right in front of my back gate/driveway, he continued so I called the police and they made him stop AND pick it up!

Except for the busy road part, this is what I was going to say! And I don't feel bad for ignoring someone who has interrupted my time however small an interruption it is.

I have a very vivid memory from my youth that still makes me hesitant to answer the door for a stranger. This was in the 80's & I can't remember exactly if I was in junior high or not. I was a latch key kid and even though I had no plans on opening the door I still peeked through the peep hole when the bell rang. So one day there's a guy ringing the bell several times. I'm watching the whole time he's ringing wondering why he doesn't figure out no one is going to answer. He finally walks to the end of the pathway, picks up a very large decorative rock by our mailbox, and throws it with all his might into the middle of the street. Weird!!

I don't even like letting salespeople come into our home to try to sell things. My husband though is a sucker for the free gift. The "gift" is never worth my time or the hard sell but I think he's finally on board with me now.

About 2 years ago when my DH was laid off, we got a call to set up an appt. for a salesperson to come to our house to sell us a vacuum cleaner (no, it wasn't rainbow-done that!). Our gift would have been a grocery card which we really could have used although I felt it was a scam of some sort. I figured when we said "no" they'd give some reason why we wouldn't be eligible.

The guy comes for the appt. & never takes the vacuum out of the box to demonstrate or even give a sales pitch. He goes on about how many more appts he has to get through tonight & how he's selling so many he doesn't need to hard sell us, blah, blah, blah. He just needs to tell mgt. he was there. I'm thinking good, he can go & leave me a gift card. Of course I need to call a number which I was later hung up on & then it was disconnected. Since these things were sooooo easy to sell & he was making sooooo much money my DH asked him for a card so maybe he could apply too. No business card. Hmmmmm. He was in our house maybe 5 minutes.

My cynical & typically distrusting mind tells me this was all a setup to get a guy in our house to case the place. Once he learned my DH was unemployed and home all the time and he could clearly see we had nothing worth stealing he wanted to get out as quickly as possible. I can't think of any other reason for the weirdness.

All this to say, I don't open my door to strangers!

HOW RUDE!!! As if you want to drive through all that!!!

I will take the numbers of cars sitting outside the house! Like I said, we were having break-ins last summer. There was a strange (unmarked) van across the street in the neighbor's driveway. The car wasn't there, but I also know the husband sometimes works weird hours, she works, and sometimes someone picks him up. The guy went into the house, using the side door. We had to get somewhere, so I couldn't watch until he left to see if it was OK. Finally I wrote the number down and gave it to a SAHM neighbor (who had already had her place broken into.) SHE said she'd watch, and then when I got in my car, Rachael said that she had seen the husband inside the house, so I felt better.

Later, the husband I laughed about it. I guess his friend commented on how his neighbors were REALLY watching him closely, and Tony informed him on WHY that was happening right now!

One time there was a black car outside my yard, our property is completley fenced, anyway I walked outside just in time to see sometime taking pics of my kids. I ran out the gate (pole fence in front so full view of our house) and the person screached off and yelled, "assessors office". I immediately called the "assessors office" and they didnt have anyone out taking pics. I called the cops with the lisc. plate number but the person had already left.

If I answer the door,I do it with one of the dogs by my side.My Saint Bernard is big enough, and loud enough, that he pretty much scares any salesman away:lol:
I have two big dogs in the back yard who are pretty intimidating to strangers too,so I don't get very many unwanted visitors.
