I liked how it started with the paragraph and broke the writing process down in to each little step. They taught to form a great paragraph first and then bigger papers. It was very clear and easy to follow.

I researched the whole SAT writing, because I am concerned about it too. It turns out, a very well written 5 paragraph essay is what is really needed. They were other examples, but Write Shop definitely targeted the skills needed for the SAT.

I think I have decided on lightning liturature for 7th (and 4th) grade. I will just have to tweak it a bit for the younger one.
I got a complete book of...for grammar this summer.
I don't know how much book work to expect...especially for the one that is behind...We fell down a bit on the grammar and writing this year, but the reading improved a TON...and we worked on paragraphs and sentances in books we were reading...I was surprised on how poorly written some sentances in published books were...we rewrote them to make them easier to understand.
We used grammar101 for about a quarter...it was at too high a reading level, so we might try it again in a year or so.

Cool, thanks! I don't really WANT to "teach to the test" at all, but even with ds17's English aptitude, he didn't get as high as I would have hoped on the ACT. Not BAD, just not as good as his ability seemed to be! Anyway, I'm wanting to give ds15 more of an idea on how to write well, so he can at least give it a shot. I'm also going to be more of a stickler with his English, and science, both of which he got lazy with this year!

I very much appreciate all your comments! Thankyou so much!

Thanks for the link, TeacherMom, but I couldn't get it to work... It said that I wasn't authorised, or something to that effect.

Grammar lessons are useful, and some of the other posts include some good links to free information, but don't underestimate the power to passively learn grammar through reading lots of good quality literature. And, it is easy to create simple lessons where the meaning of a sentence changes, dependent on the punctuation, etc.

Your local library should have all of the classics and a lot will even include study guides. You can also pick up paperbacks of classics for ridiculously cheap prices, especially at second hand book stores.... and you can write in these!

oh we have the books, its the writting of sentences he needs work on. I really like the ones that have some fill in the blank and some write it out yourself. It does not seem to overwhelm him and we get the instruction on structure that I missed as a student. ( could be we moved too much at this age?)

Jackie do you get everything for the ENGLISH SET?

I am on their web site looking and thinking the English 7 set may work for us, and then I have spelling already and reading is not a problem....

Yes. I bought both grades 4 and 6 for next year. Both have the student text, the Teacher's book, test booklet, and worksheets.

Actually R&S is like that, but not a workbook. I go over the answers from the day before, go over the lesson, and then give the assignment for the day. The book is divided into about six units, each with a specific topic. And there is also review. I've really learned a bit this year going over it with Faythe and Phillip. DEENA!!! I CAN DIAGRAM SENTENCES!!!

Wee! I had fun with that in English 5 and 6 with BJU too, learning the diagraming, I had never had it this extent in my schooling. we diagramed much more simply done diagrams.
Now he is at a good level there, hates it but understand it?
So lets see... what other questions can I ask you>? I like the prices I am finding on R&S, ... so where to the questions come from? Is it like a text that they write answers to on the side thatyou go over? I mean on side notebooks? Ihave tons of notebooks so fine with that!
