Yes, it can be used with any book. No, you don't have to buy any extra guides. Some guides are available for those who want guidance with a few books before trying it on their own. Yes, it can be done orally. There are no "writing assignments." The higher level questions can be used as writing assignments. It's only literature -- no grammar.

TeacherMom, are you talking to me about Teaching the Classics? If so, you've misunderstood. TTC can be used with any book. Their book lists are only books they recommend because they think they're good stories and good for teaching literary analysis and interpretation.

Also, in TTC, various books/stories are used to teach diffferent literary elements. It uses The Tale of Peter Rabbit to teach Plot and Conflict, and then it has a little extra info about P&C for The Iliad, Macbeth, and Great Expectations. Other literary elements are taught using other books. But that info is for the teacher as models "for teaching the skills of literary analysis and interpretation" to their students.

TTC has a free guide for The Bronze Bow. I think it's at the middle school level, but I'm not sure. It has some of the questions from the Socratic list, so that'll give you an idea of the types of questions that are in the list. It'll also help you decide whether that's a method you want to try for teaching literature.

    ARRGH.
So I thought I had decided on lightning lit...but now I kind of like this too. ugh ugh.
too many choices. (not really...I like the choices)

we tried reading the bronze bow...and got bored. (me too, so it isn't just ds)
I like the idea of using it with different books. plus the guides for specific books are cheaper than progeny...I can't see paying 20$ a book. (plus the book itself)
    but 9$...maybe.
I suppose I could do the scottforesman for grammar. (I was sooooo bored with that. but just one page a day...maybe that wouldn't be so bad.)
and we are getting a bit better at doing the journal, and I could go back to writing in my journal while the boys are doing theirs.
    ....thinking....thinking.

The R&S 9/10 books are different! I had them but decided not to go that route, since we're still in the lower levels anyway.

TMom, that $46 is for the whole set--Student Text, Teacher's Book, Tests, and worksheets. Everything you'd need.

Your other question--DS15 will be doing BJU 8th grade English. Hopefully it will work out okay and he'll enjoy it! Or at least like it enough to keep working, and make it through! My oldest did the BJU whole Curriculum in 10th and told me recently he is sooo glad he used, especially, the English! He said he really learned a lot in the class, and it helped define what he wanted to do. He wants to teach English and Spanish in highschool or elementary school or do something with interpretation! I'm very pleased! DS15 will be in 10th grade, but there is absolutely NO WAY he could get through the BJU 10th grade English! It's just not a level he's at, it's not his thing, no matter what. But I'm very glad he's made it as far as he has. I think his voracious reading helps a lot!

okay after all that researching, I am going to add to this , I AM GOING TO GET Writing strands 3- or 4 they both look like what he could do and are written for homeschoolers!
I love how it is written to the student, repeats itself to make sure the kid is really paying attention to what they are reading! LOVE IT LOVE IT! Put it in my cart already even!

so, I have my printable spelling packet, writing strands which looks like it will work for what we need as we have had two years of heavy diagraming etc, and I can always go back to the 8th grade bju the following year if I see a need for that.. i may actually have him test next year since I will be volunteering for that drama class down there.. they shoudl at least include him in that for me eh?
so, if there is a page a day grammar fun type book , like maybe I will get a Spectrum grammar ? Is there one for 7th grade? for a filler for the week off that Writing strands has?
