Table or Desk? I like cubicles or desks because they tend to induce a more focused learning approach... Which do you prefer for schooling and why?
We use the kitchen table because we don't have a hs room yet. We have no room for the 2 desks we have anywhere but their room right now. When we move I'll probably ONLY use the desks for handwriting practice or something like that. If we do end up with a hs room I'll probably use a table so that I can sit with them and we can have the extra room to spread out.
They have their own desks. They are spaced apart, and each have a drawer within the desk. It makes it much easier for learning in our household. My little ones are a year apart and BEST friends, so if we used a table they'd just giggle at each other all day!
We have two old school desks that we use. They are both the kind that have the full writing surface.Everytime I look at them it takes me back to my days in early elementary schoolThese desks are small enough that I can move them around as needed.
We hada couple of desks and got rid of them because Ems never used them. We school all over the place so a desk is no longer in consideration.
We school all over the house as well. Each kid has a desk in their room but rarely use it (except to pile junk on). My son uses the kitchen/dining table. My girls use the couch or floor....sometimes the kitchen/dining table or little breakfast table.....every once in a while, the little art table in the playroom. Rhonda
We have a huge old drafting table. It's big enough that the kids can each have a side (plus me) and still have plenty of room for working. We are all only at it for about 2 hours though. My oldest goes upstairs to work on her independent work while I work with the younger two.
We do have an area that we do use for school but we also end up where ever. Sometimes the dining table or the living room floor. Other times the kids do school work on their beds. The last few weeks have been full with appointments so we have been doing school work at the doctor's offices.
In our school room, we have one big table (well, big to us) and a couple small ones. As the kids get older, I want to consider desks, simply because they don't really have any personal place/space right now to put their "own" things. Now it's nto that big an issue, but as they get older, it will be.
Wow! These places are interesting! bed, couch, floor, Dr. office, kitchen, dining / breakfast table, all over the house ... They don't call it HOME school for nothing. Thanks for the responses!
My two cents They each have desks in their room....and never use them. They usually work wherever I am (kitchen or dining room table). If they are goofing off their punishment is usually working in their room at the desk:twisted:!
They each have a desk in the play room (used to be the school room), but they never use them. They do most of their school work at the dining room table. I'm thinking of moving the desks into the dining room, so maybe they'll actually get used.
well after we had our house build I was so excited to have a room to call my homeschool room, yea guess what that is all it's called we never use it anyway. We have desk in there, they sure look nice but that is it. Nice nothing else. We homeshool where ever we feel the need too, in the van, on the road, at the dentist office, on the kitchen table, on the floor in the living room, outside on a blanket. Depends on what we are studying and what books and things we need for that subject. So, I don't know if desk are all that great, it depends on the child. Like I said after 6 years living full time in RV I was excited, it really is a nice room. But, a waste of space in my book.
We homeschool all over our home, even on a picnic blanket in the yard on very nice days or the back deck, but for projects I do have a nice adjustable height folding table and two chairs in my craft/art studio with an multi-use easel to use as a white board or chalk board or art easel. Another note, I only have one child so I don't have the need to keep the children separated, but she is highly distracted by people and other children, so if it came to that, I would use something to create a space between the children, even to separate desks for each.
My daughter uses the desk, kitchen table, kitchen counter, floor, playroom, deck, yard, front porch, park library, etc. etc!!! This helps to reinforce our belief that learning is something that takes place at any time (all the time!) and anywhere.
We got old school desks, with the lift up top, and my boys think it is fun to use them and have a place to put their paper and stuff (very messy, LOL). We have a school room and most days we start out there at least. We have a large calendar and weather chart on the wall (left over from my days teaching preschool before I had kids). DS7's other favorite place to do his work is kneeling at the coffee table in the living room so some days we move there. We have taken work to the patio table outside also, but probably won't be doing that again any time soon since it will be too cold out there for the next 6 months or so, LOL.
