We have desks...but that's because my boys fight over space...you know the age old His paper is touching my paper type thing.
We used to have desk that we bought the kids but they seem to like the table more they can spread the work out. Sam
We school at the library alot, too. We go down into their "conference" room, spread all our stuff out and away we go. We often take lunch with us there too.
Sheila, I think it is great that you are allowed to use the conference room. At our library, it can only be used by appointment and we have to have a large group.
My local library opens its doors to Homeshoolers as well... They don't mind us... Infact, they dread the 2 O'Clock hour when the other schools get out!
I don't have 1 set place. My children have desks in their rooms, but those have nothing to do with homeschooling. When we first homeschooled, I did buy special little desks for our "classroom." Those were nice as they were cute and the kids could keep their work in their little desks. But, eventually, we gave up the classroom idea and became more casual.
we use the bed a lot too. either ds's...where I have the laptop plugged in. (shall we discuss dell batteries?:evil or mine...for the Mon and Tues. mornings when I am on my way to bed and we start the day with reading and an explination of the math lesson. We have a great desk...which we use for storage...but rarely actual seatwork.
The Big Comfy Couch. We do have the dining room table set up as a home school spot - as we never actually eat there. But it's just where we pile our supplies. Most days the actual learning takes place on the couch.
We use our gameroom for doing schoolwork. Both my 12 year old and 3 year old have their own desk to work at. I turned my eldest son's room into an office/computer center. Since the gameroom is right accross from the office, my son has a smooth transition.
We have a desk for when they want to work seperately (my DD7 gets mad when DD5 "looks" at her paper), and a table for working together or when they don't mind seperate togetherness. But we also use the couch, floor, bed, etc. My DH brought home the desks (3 school-esque), and I thought about getting rid of them, but they work for keeping the kids school notebooks in and giving them some "personal" space.
