DanielsMom - I was talking about the CHAP convention in Harrisburg held every Mother's Day weekend. It is really good, have you ever been?
ANyone heard of videotext? They have Math and Algerbra dvds and videos and then the texts as well as a workbook if I recall. We just recieved it in the mail as a sample package and I am checking it still, but my dd loves it already from checking the dvd she learned some Algerbra stuff she was strugling with, pretty cool!
My oldest uses VideoText Algebra. It's not cheap either! We were grasping for something, so decided to put out the money for it. Ds13, however, like his Saxon Algebra, so we're sticking with that for him. I don't know how it compares with Teaching Textbooks, since I'm not sure how TT works. VideoText explains things very well on a video tape/or/dvd they watch, then they do the assignment. Our oldest doesn't like Algebra, but he works with this better than anything else!
So it's all done on DVD, and not in the book? When I saw the Teaching Textbook book, I was impressed with how easy it was to understand.
Lol, gotta laugh at this. People always say they can tell we're from PA because we don't finish our sentences. Most people would expect a "there" at the end of that question! No, I've never been there. Daniel is still 4 so I've never been to the point of needing to buy or look around much yet. What's it like?
video is taught on tv but then the kids do work in text books too from how the brochure says. I got it from videotext.com they have a spot to send for free sample they also follow up to see if you recieved it and what you think, offer you special offers etc. still the price IS steep so be prepared. I am really impressed with it so far but have not seen anything to compareit to.. what is the taking text book like? Is it a dvd program too?
Yes, they have workbooks, the dvd's or tapes go through things step-by-step, then they do the assignment in their book.
DanielsMom - LOL, You'd think I'd learn. I've been told that here before!!! I personally love the convention. I usually buy most of my curriculum at used sales in the spring and then pick up everything else at convention. Dh and I go both days and use one day for shopping and the other for seminars. I am a seminar geek, just love to learn. I've heard people say it can be overwhelming, I've never felt that way. Then again, my life is pretty crazy with all my kids!! LOL
Crystal, in Columbus the Vendor's Hall opens the night BEFORE the convention. So I go then, usually get all my buying then, and I'm free to attend workshops without having to shop more. Like you, I buy a lot used. What I can't find, I get at the Convention, usually from Rainbow Resource. Anything they don't have there you can order and they will send it with free shipping.
Jackie, Last year Dh and I worked at our convention the night before helping to set up. They paid us $10 an hr each plus provided lunch. I thought that was a pretty good deal to help set up homeschool books all day!!! I got lots of ideas and to peak at things. We werent allowed to acutally shop yet, but did walk around. Its a huge convention. This year being 9 months prego at the time I dont think I will be able to help out. Dh said he and my oldesd Ds will go up and help if I am not in the hospital.
I'm pretty settled on Teaching Textbooks now. But I'm not finding much used, and all the catalogs have it listed at the same price...about $185. Has anyone found it cheaper? Teaching Textbooks WILL ship complete sets for free...I'm beginning to think this is the best deal I can find. Also, does anyone have an opinion on whether you should take Algebra II before Geometry, or after? I read something recently that suggested we'd be better off taking Algebra II first, partly because the kids still have the Algebra concepts fresh. Any thoughts? (If anyone has found a site for Teaching Textbooks cheaper, let me know! I'm not seeing much used! I found on Geometry textbook used, but without CD's. By the time I bought the CD's seperate, I'd be back to the price of the original set!
I have not used these yet, But I to plan on buying them this year. I would love to find them used but haven't yet either. My dd 12 has a hard time with Math so we are going for it. I have heard great things about this from many families in our area. So I figured we NEED to try it. ANYTHING has to help. If it doesn't selling it would not be a problem. Thanks for sharing all this info though I learned a little more... Blessings Lisa
JAckie, dd is really wanting that too.... she said if she stays home she really wants the Geometry, she said the sample said you can get just that... she paid more attention than I did since she is the one who will be learning it. So I am emailing the people and asking them about that. Since she is already working on Algerbra1 this year... ALgerbra1 Geometry then Algerbra2 then Trig thats how they have it set up in schools around my day, and most that I check have it that way too... I think Saxon is the only one I knwo that mixes them.
Teaching textbooks can be purchased online, they phoned us and emailed me a lot to check, plus sent me emails about discounts! Its my math probable for dd if she says home she said its her first choice!
I think I read on another site that the Teaching Textbook CD's can only be used once (something about once the question is answered the problem disappears). That's probably why you can't find much used. I'll see if I can find that link so you can have more information.
Here are portions of the discussion on TT. It seems that you will have to buy new CD's, but maybe you can find used textbooks and teachers manuals?
