I'm in central Ohio, T'mom! Columbus is a capital city, too! I think what you hear is only a small percent of what's going on!

A few years back, in the city over, a teacher was almost trampled to death. There was a fight and many of the students wanted to see it and were running. The teacher was knocked down in the process and trampled on by dozens of students. The news never shared the story. I heard it from a teacher who had heard about it.

When Handsome and I where dating, Wendy's teacher asked her if her father had a girlfriend because she wanted to go out with him.
I was blown away that a teacher was using a student to get a date. That was pathetic, not to mention it got me riled up! She actually gave Wendy her phone number and asked her to give it to Handsome.
This was also in an upper class area, in a school that was labeled as one of the best.

The rule in our district is that whenever there's a fight, all on-lookers get suspended as well. Those kids that run to watch are actually egging the fight on. My one young friend in the high school says that whenever she sees girls removing earrings, she turns the other way and goes down a DIFFERENT hall, because it shows they're getting serious.

I just read through the thread. Many good points have been brought up. I think hsing or ps is a personal decision. Although I graduated from high school in 91, so that was some time ago, I went to ps my whole life. There were problems. There were drugs, guns, and all that. I never was involved in any of it. I have never been in a fight. I also got a decent education.....could have been better. I also look back and see school as a positive experience. Yet, I can also look back and see where even then "state values" played a role in my belief system at the time.

I felt my decision to homeschool was led by the Lord. I have be blessed to get to really know my kids. I know how their minds work. I know what they love and what they hate about school and life. I can help them explore their talents and improve upon their weaknesses. I can be a part of their spiritual growth everyday. I know they are not being infused with secular humanism. I know they are not being bullied---not talking about mean kids---serious bullying. I know they are not the bullies...lol. I enjoy spending time with the children the Lord has given me charge over. Could I have known my kids as well if they went to ps? Honestly, I don't know....it hasn't been my experience so I can't speak to that. My mother had a way of knowing me pretty well and I went to ps for 12 years. lol. However, I see the benefits in my children spirtually. My dd talks to other kids in AWANA about getting saved. My dd can see things on tv or hear things and discern what is Godly and unGodly. My ds reads his bible for reading time. My older dd and ds have been able to bond with their 20 month old sister in a way they wouldn't be able to if they were gone a lot. My kids have learned that we are a family...we are on the same team and we work as a team. We help each out with chores, with emotional issues, with educational issues, with everything. Again, could this be achieved if my kids went to ps? Again, I don't know...not my experience. I do hope so though....I hope so...as my children may be going to school in the fall. Hsing is about real life. Hsing goes beyond education. You see, I am blessed to live in a area where some (not all) of the schools are top notch. There are three schools I know of that challenge, motivate and work with the kids as individuals. Two of the schools will allow the child to progress as the child's rate....for instance a 5th grader can do 7th grade math....etc. I am blessed that there are three schools that I can choose from that would give my kids a quality and challenging education. Hsing provided, for my family, a quality, challenging, and christian education. It provided a bond that will last a lifetime. I must admit, it is selfish of me, but there is nothing I enjoy more than in the middle of the afternoon just deciding to play a board game with my kids. lol. I enjoy being a part of their education.

Yes, I have seen a few girls unable to take earrings off in time...yuck. I never watched fights. There were plenty of us that stayed away. There were always fights in the lunchroom. If there was one fight you can bet there would be another. Once I did see a boy slamming another boy on he lunchroom table. Crazy.

We had a superintendent of schools that molested his 8 yr old granddaughter a few years back. Thankfully examples like these aren't the norm.

okay I got the sample copy of video text folks! Seeing as the topic is what is best and why?
I like it, so far, my dd loves it! She sat and watched this dvd sample on Algerbraic Equations and came to me and said Mom, I want it!
They showed how to do it step by step.
now it is pricey but comes with text, and workbook as well as the computer thing. I have to talk to my hubby and see what he thinks after watching it.
Algerbra is fun to me, but hard to explain and understand while learning and easily mixed up.
If we get this thing I will have the help we need right there hands on constantly.
I am thinking of seeing if my Church's school would like to purchase a copy and we could go in on it, then we could each get our own workbooks or something?
I was approached by one of the gals at the school today who asked me when I coudl come back to help because she wants me to teach her math!
    Me!
Then I started thinking, maybe I could do jr high grade level Algerbra stuff, cause thats what shes in that and the exponential notation which I totally love even if my fingers wont let me typeit right today!
I am typing two handed but my right hand now forgot how!
so what does anyone think is best, the idea of getting a talking text book so to speak liek this, or what? Maybe I need to start a new thread,... Ill set it up tomorrow if I dont get much reply to this.
    be blessed!
videotext.com or net or something is the web site,

In one of our elementary schools a teacher is being charged with molesting at least 17 children. The police are also investigating him for 15 other possible molestation cases. It is scary to think that parents leave their children in the hands of these people for numerous hours a day and tell their children they need to do what the teacher tells them to do. The parents put all their faith in this teacher, assuming it was safe to leave their children with him. The reason everything was discovered was because a 6 year old told her mom that he was touching her.:x :x
I understand that every teacher is not this man but I can't help thinking what a gamble I would be taking if I put Ems in public school. I am positive these parents didn't think he was a molester when their chilren started his class.
Just thinking about it gives me chills!!

Something I read today on Dr. Dobson's website.....

    http://www.citizenlink.org/CLNews/A000003744.cfm

Last week, a bus driver in Columbus was pulled over (no kids on the bus!) for making an illegal turn. The officer found a syringe on the floor with cocaine in it, and the driver tested positive!!! This was on Wednesday; schools were closed on Thursday, because the board discovered that the company they had contracted with to drive about 50 buses hadn't done the "manditory" background checks on their drivers. So those drivers were temporarily "shut down" until the checks could be done. That meant that not only Columbus schools closed, but also many of the private schools that Columbus transported to. Schools were up and running again on Friday.

My high school sociology teacher was fired mid-year for inappropriate s*xual conduct with students. It was never publicized. He just left quietly mid-year. Probably the only reason that I knew was that 2 of the girls involved were in my class. I vaguely remember it happening with another teacher shortly after that. So yes, it certainly does happen in public schools.

Here I go setting myself up to get labeled on my second post here...

Don't think I'm a militant public school hater, because actually we solidified our decision to home school just recently. We had some concerns. Allowing myself to examine those concerns honestly changed my mind a lot... and I just may turn into a militant over time! I worried that our children wouldn't gain strength from being tested and having to stand up for their values. I worried that my kids would turn into some stereotype I had in my head of anal momma's boys with short pants, bowties and sweater vests. (No offense to mom's who like bowties and sweatervests)

The more I let those notions go and looked at it honestly, the more those arguments seemed not to hold water. I had some really bad public school experiences, posted on a previous thread. Reliving those memories frightened me for my kids. As for being a social misfit, I realized that my son is not like that now, and he's been home all this time, so why would that change all of a sudden when he turns five. I realized that most of my social interaction came with friends from church and from the neighborhood, and school did NOT teach me social skills, but social survival. Social survival is an unnecessary form of cowardice in adulthood in my opinion (putting on different faces for different company).

I wanted to address the argument about the "real world". I think that people assume that a homeschooled child has no exposure outside of home which is untrue. Homeschooled kids (generally) have gradually more and more exposure as they mature, and they have guided exposure which is a good thing when our little ones are still building their foundation and figuring out who they are.

Notsure - you brought up that children in public school learn to question authority.... here's my take on that - I believe my children should respect authority, the ultimate authority being God. When the lesser authorities are not following God's teachings, they are to question the lesser authority out of respect for the greater authority. Another thing about that, is that many homeschooled kids tend to be more civically active (at least around here) and they have more opportunity to learn how to get involved on the grassroots level to bring about change - which teaches much more than signing a petition IMO.

As for spanking, I'm only opposed to it because it doesn't work for my kidlet... he'll just hit back, lol. It worked on me though and I'm not violent, nor a coward, so there's my $.06 (inflation).
