"... I do not think it means what you think it means."

Northernmomma's post on the thread about volunteering got me thinking about words that are commonly misused.

My biggest pet peeve (I mean, I actually cringe when I hear it) is "literally."

Lady, unless you wrote about it first, you did NOT literally laugh until you cried.

    What are some others?

People who say they want to loose weight. I get this mental picture of a lot of excess weight running around like a pet dog that got out of the house!

Obviously is my pet peeve. I want to say, NO it's not obvious to me and NO I am not stupid. OBVIOUSLY you need to say what you mean so people can get it the first time and you won't have to repeat it!!!

Not a word, but my pet peeve lately has been ds leaving cabinet drawers/doors open. For some reason, it makes me want to scream! He is finally getting it and the other day he caught an open door before I did and I heard him say "oops, let me close that door before your blood boils". Ok, I know off track but the first thing that popped into my mind when you said pet peeve.

Down here close to the border, many people say "right now" as in "I'll do it right now". Except, they don't mean they are going to do it RIGHT now. It just means they plan to get to it. In Spanish they say "ahorita" for right now, but it is the same thing, not NOW, just some time soon.

"in a minute" when it really means "I'll pretend to forget the minute you walk away."

    ARG!

Any non-word that's used as a word because people don't realize it isn't one.

I don't throw too many stones, though. I've reread my own posts and sometimes the repetitiveness and sketchy grammar irritates me

    "twiced" instead of twice.

"We was" instead of "we were"

Pacific is an ocean. What they really mean is specific. "Pacifically"... Ugh. Drives me up the wall. Not literally... :D

There is a song we sing in church that says, "the only One that's worthy". I have to sing "who's" instead of "that". I mean, God is a Who, not a what.

My husband got me doing this and I cringe whenever I say it. When he's going somewhere I will ask, "Can I come with?" Instead of "Can I come with you?" It just feels incomplete.

It drives me up a wall when someone misuses pronouns.

Please give it to Joe and I. THIS IS WRONG!
Here's a picture of Sally and I. (WRONG!)
Joe and me are going to the store. (WRONG!)
It'll be just you and I at the restaurant tonight. (WRONG!!)
Me and her are best friends. (WRONG!)
The party will be given by she and I. (WRONG!)
Us parents will meet you there later. (WRONG!)

I hear these all the time and I want to scream.

My biggest one, and one I don't tolerate from my children is when someone (even adults!) say HIM(s) instead of HE! ex "him's hitting me" My friends 4 year old does this and it irritates me!

When little kids (5 and under) swear.

I'm not talking whoops! She didn't know what it meant and it's time for a talk!

No, I'm talking about those tiny kids who say da*n this, and da*n that... UGH.

You can tell it's a pet peeve... my kids are forever saying, "is that a bad word?" about things that sound like they might be naughty but aren't.

I agree swearing out of the mouths of babes is a yikes for me too. I don't really like hearing it at all. But if one must swear at least be of age. :|

When my kids were little we didn't allow name-calling or swearing. In our house, the s-word is "stupid" and the h-word is "hate". For the longest time my kids didn't even know there existed another bad s- or h- word. lol We were at a new church years ago and my son came running up to me (I was with a group of older ladies and moms) and said, "Jason used the s-word!" Shock and gasps from the ladies. I told DS thank you for telling me, and to go play with the other group of kids instead. Then I had to explain to the moms that he meant "stupid" not the other. lol Talk about being the odd mom out that day!
My kids are growing, and we still don't use these words if an alternative can be found, which is often the case!
    Idiot
    Dummy
Stupid (as a name, acceptable sometimes when describing something that really is stupid)
    Hate
    Moron
Sucks - this word is my number one pet peeve of all time! Really, how intelligent does this make anyone sound?? I've heard pastors and politicians and parents use this and I just cringe.

There are more, but you get the idea. What it has helped with is to make my boys aware that 1) there is always a better word choice than these, and to think of those instead and 2) name-calling is not necessary or Christian.
