Not sure how it is where you are, but here...if you smoke, are overweight, etc....you pay MORE into your insurance because you are a higher risk. ;)

ahhh. see i don't really know how the US system works, aside from it being a lot different than ours

curious - what about people who pursue 'risky' recreational activities...those who skydive, climb mountains, white water raft, race cars, or things like that? does that type of thing also play into what you pay for your health insurance? if someone is injured doing those things...?

(of course, a person could get injured just walking down the road.. lol)

'round about 2000 years ago?

    *grin*

(it would be interesting to have contributions to this discussion from someone who was both a christian AND a supporter of legalized prostitution - i've no doubt there are, as there's such a wide range of ....what's the word i want... 'types' of christians?..mmmm... there must be a better word than that...but you know what i mean?)

It could, but it all depends on the circumstances and the insurance company. On insurance applications it does ask about your career/job, but it usually doesn't ask about recreational activities. However, around here insurance companies will try to get out of paying whenever they can. So...let's say someone goes bungee jumping and gets hurt...even if a waiver is signed, they could potentially still say they wont pay it because the other insured party of the busness should pay it. It's a lot of hogwash.

NOW...if we're talking about government run healthcare...that is actually a subject I sit on the fence about. :D I know a lot of Christians who are NOT for it...and there are reasons I am not 100% for it either, BUT I have experience with government run healthcare and have not had a single issue and pay SO MUCH LESS out of pocket...so...that is why I sit on the fence...

That would be interesting...I mean if one actually exists. lol. But I'm sure you could find one if you looked hard enough. Christianity is not about a set of rules...it's about glorifying the Lord and many interpret how to do that differently. However, that mix of person would be a strange bird indeed.

Types...you may mean denominations. Very confusing. I'm not a denomination type of person AND Christian can mean different things to different people oddly enough. So you need to KNOW who are you talking to...so you are on to something. I am a bible believing, born again, saved by grace Christian. I do believe most of those who use the term Christian on here are also.

It seems there are some people who use the term 'Christian' a bit loosely. I knew someone who said she was Christian, but she said she wasn't sure if she full believed Christ saves us. :shock:Well then....you're NOT a Christian in the true sense of what it means to be a Christian then. Some people will say they are Christian just because they grew up in a Christian home. Christianity isn't about 'how you grew up', it's about letting Christ grow your heart. It's also not something, like ancestory, where it 'stays in your blood'...Christianity stays in your heart.

oh i'm sure there is -- i was actually talking even beyond denominations and whatnot because people can vary within those too, but yeah....there's certainly big variations on stuff between denominations as well. i've been to a some different churches before and seen some huge variations!

(i was thinking sort of like how there are christians who support same-sex marriages and christians who don't...it's a controversial issue with christians on both sides... so i figure there likely is with this as well...)

eta: i'm gonna ask santa for a thesaurus this year. variation variation variation *twitch*

ahh okay ~ it sounds like insurance companies would be a PITA to deal with.

(heck it's bad enough that we have to do it with our cars :p )

we (my family) do have 'extra' stuff (benefits) through my husband's workplace - which i think might function *somewhat* like your US health insurance... it's for stuff beyond what the provincial health care covers, but we do have to 'claim' things and pay certain amounts of stuff, they have ceilings for what they cover, etc... like dental, podiatry, those sorts of things.

i've never really had any serious problems with our health care system... i've heard from people who have, canadians who would prefer a system more like the US, but for us - it's been fine. no major issues so far.

I suppose I do not understand what you mean by beyond denominations. Are you talking about those who follow Christ or those who claim to be spiritual meaning a belief in the beyond but not necessarily Christ. LOL..I'm confused. NO matter...it's okay.

Oh I'm sure if you look hard enough you will find a Christian that believes in flying reindeer. That does not mean they represent the Word of God. If the Bible is your guide there is NO WAY prostitution can be justified or considered moral. So if someone claims to follow the bible then supports something contradictory...who cares what they think. LOL. Now if they follow something else...and say that...that's another story.

Now don't think me self righteous...the bible simply does not condone prostitution. So to find a Christian who does that person is misguided or not a Christain.

That's funny, because there are people here who want it ran like Canada's! People always think the grass is greener on the other side, but either way you look at it, it's still the same ole' brown grass. :) Ha!

i think maybe i meant "interpretations" ... the way that there are different interpretations of things by various christians even within the same denomination (or those without a claimed denomination) ... does that make more sense?

kinda like how some christians believe that the creation story is literal and others believe that it's more symbolistic/allegorical/etc (ha, is symbolistic a word? if it isn't, it should be.) ...or stuff like that.

Only if you allow your government to babysit you. My government will be stopped from making decisions and paying my bills. Period. So no - "we" don't need to regulate any of those things.

However - if I were a Canadian or European who was paying into a socialist health care system all my life - then YES. All those things are more should be regulated for the common good.

Can you see why letting the government take care of you like a helpless child leads to loss of freedom?

ok actually ~ when it gets too political, i get completely lost.

i've been a canadian all my life and the health care system doesn't bother me.. nor do i feel "[taken] care of like a helpless child".

(of course, we're viewing it through two very different sets of eyes - i've never known anything else and you've never known this.)

Pssst....I've known both and let me tell you a secret. Canadians have it good. I didn't think I would like it, but now I chide myself for not moving here a decade earlier.

You asked if undesirable behaviors should be regulated and I said YES. If the government is paying your bills, as I would pay the health care bills of my children, then they get to regulate those behaviors which lead to more expensive health care. Just as I get to regulate my children's diet etc. and prevent them from activities which I deem to be a strain on my budget or which might lead to future expenses that I do not care to pay for.

If the government doesn't pay your bills, then NO - they don't have the right to regulate behaviors which would lead to more expensive health care.

Prostitution is a high risk, let me be polite and say, "occupation". So, if I were a Canadian citizen I would be pretty ticked off that I have to not only allow this behavior in my neighborhood, but also foot the bill for their increased health risks.

I can certainly understand a woman's decision to sell herself for money, there are any number of situations which might force her to do so. But the way in which this type of undesirable behavior has been controlled in the past is through the morality stigma. It keeps it in check.

But today, many young people have been taught that morality doesn't exist and thus the entire fabric of society has broken down. Prostitution is part of that break-down and the lack of morals is the number one reason. If prostitution is moral, then what ISN'T moral?

If ruining one's life with heroin is moral, and giving them "clean" needles in which to do so is moral - then what ISN'T moral?

The "rightness and wrongness" of these issues is intuitive and if people can't see that these things are not part of "morality" - if prostitution and legalized heroin use is suddenly subjectively "moral", well then - I feel sorry for those people. They are a sad case of humanity.

    This stuff is common sense.

Each person gets one life and while no one can stop people from ruining their one chance - they don't have to choose to stand by and hand them a gun either.

Those who choose to allow immoral acts, in fact - promote immoral acts through this ridiculous regulation, are contributing to the damnation of these weak people who would do much better with a little bit of strength and positive support instead.

And by damnation I don't mean hell with the devil. I mean the hell they live everyday because they have to sell their body or shoot that heroin and they can't stop. Either because they have no other "profession" to pay their bills or because the withdrawal from their addiction would kill them.

This is the eternal battle - to do what is right or to do what is wrong. No one can choose for you - but every choice has consequences. Without the moral objectors there would be no society.

And Amen, again. And I agree with Amie on all her other post in this thread, too.
