I watched the video. It didn't seem inappropriate to me - I actually thought it was cute! The song was seemingly fitting for the context they had it. I found it all very amusing.

It was Katy Perry out of her normal context. She wasn't singing about kissing girls or anything else.

It did, however, lack any educational value, which is what Sesame Street is supposed to be about. That's where my issue lies - not in the fact that it was Katy Perry - but what were children supposed to learn? Hot and cold, maybe??

I'm probably going to get the tomatoes with the sauce thrown at me for this one!
I have no clue who Katy Perry is or what she does. This was the first time I've ever seen her or heard her voice.
I thought the outfit was...um...ugly. Not from the standpoint of inappropriate because it looked like a skaters' outfit to me. It was just plain ugly.
However, I have a different take on the video. I felt like it was teaching children that its' ok not to keep your word or that you can change your mind without any concern for others feelings.
Elmo had said he would play dress up. But instead of telling the truth that he had changed his mind and asking to play tag, when asked he took off running. So do we really want our children to behave that way toward other kids or do we think its ok for other kids to do that to ours?
The outfit didn't strike me as hard as the moral of the video. If my son behaved that way I'd turn him over my knee and if another kid did it to him, they would be sent home pronto.
    Just my thoughts.

And George Carlin was the BEST narrator for Thomas ever; I didn't know how talented he was until utter a sentecne without swear word in it. His voices of the engines were amazing! The difference, however, is that he was not seen and neither were his nibblets or gibblets. In addition, kids probably had no idea who he was or even that a guy named George was narrating. And it was highly unlikely that they would have looked him up to find one of his raunchy comedy bits. Kate Perry, on the other hand, was quite visible and is a personality that the kids are likely to see on TV as they flip channels or on magazine covers as they stand in line at the grocery store. It would be my desire that my children not even hear the name Kate Perry or Lady Gaga for as long as I can prevent it. Children who are exposed to in-your-face immorality at a young age are more likely to become desensitized to it and view it as normal. I think that I should show grace to sinners just as grace has been shown to me, a rotten sinner myself. However, I do not think we have to stand by while celebs celebrate sin and try to bring our kids in on the party.

Wow! I was so taken back by the outfit that I didn't even think of this. You are so right. No tomato throwing here! (I still think the outfit was inappropriate, however.)

Not that it changes what she has done recently, but apparently, she used to be a Christian rock singer, and released an album in 2001 under the name Katy Hudson. Too bad she felt she had to go "that way" to gain popularity.

Never heard of the chick so I'm sure my kids haven't either. However, I think I heard Hot n Cold before...hmmm...I don't know. I think I did. At least my little ones would know nothing about her. So the fact that she was on, I don't care. I do think the dress was NOT appropriate for a preschooler's TV show. The dress had to go. I did not listen to the lyrics as my speaker was not on and I didn't care...lol. I am guessing the lyrics were okay but the outfit not? The outfit had to go but the chick can stay if she can keep it on a preschool level.

I think Lady Gaga is DISGUSTING. However, if she decided to wear clothes and sing about something other than sex...she could be on SS for all I care.

Looked up Katy Perry...she's not my cup of tea. She is certainly no example for my girls. From what I see she was covered up for her in SS. LOL. She is not the best choice based on a ton of things but still...if she can keep her clothes on and sing the ABC's...I still don't care.

Oh and I did hear the Hot n Cold song before...kinda like it. I wouldn't go out of my way to listen to it but it's kinda fun. Don't know the lyrics exactly so for all I know I'm digging myself in a hole. The same way I said something positive about Lady Gaga once...YIKES...my dd corrected me. LOL. My dd thinks she's disgusting. I put a video on of her's on YouTube...my dd wanted to prove to me that Lady Gaga was Gag Gag...I couldn't sit through it. So..I really know nothing about this Katy Perry chick.

OH but I did listen to the Katy Perry SS performance on YouTube...ADORABLE if only she was covered up.

I don't know anything about Katy Perry other than the lyrics posted here. The dress was a bit much, but we don't watch SS anyway as it's not educational but political these days. I did run across a comment that mentioned how provacative Miss Piggy has always dressed.

I have no problem with it at all.....but then I also like Katy Perry's music....as does my *gasp* not yet 4yo son! LOL But then again he also likes Black Eyed Peas (radio edit versions), any and all dance music that has a good beat. (He knows very few true children's songs and I am ok with that).

Personally I find it sad that a small group of complaining parents can have such an impact and have the spot removed....

But that is just my 2 cents and we can't always agree and think the same :)

I took my now 14dd to see the Black Eyed Peas when she was 9. We had a BLAST at the concert! She is now doing a solo dance to a little known Brittney Spears song for competition this year. We listen to a huge variety of music in our home. I have nothing against Katy Perry but I won't let my dd7 listen to her sing about kissing girls. We do however like to song Hot and Cold.

It was SS and she didn't HAVE to wear an outfit so low cut for the show. That is the only issue I have. However it was supposed to be for dress up. Heck I have low cut shirts and my girls see me wear them when my husband and I go out, we also wear bikinis. I don't see what the huge deal is. I too find it sad that a small group could can a performance.

My boys know very little children's songs as well. DH and I have always listened to "our" music when the kids were in the car, and I haven't seen any adverse affects. However, we don't listen to songs by Katy Perry for the same reason we don't listen to songs from System of a Down (one of my faves), Eminem, or Slipknot (dh's fave). It's too much for a child and has too much stuff in it that I don't want my kids knowing about. The SS thing was fine except for her outfit. She could have covered her cleavage a bit better...but then again soem people are kosher w/ that. We stopped watching SS a long time ago (along with some other shows) because it has turned more political/progressive over the years. :/

I like the song Hot n Cold....but I hardly listen to secular music other than 80s music and a few other things. Not because of a moral objection...because I'm an old foggy...LOL. I did however like some of the black eyed peas! If I can listen to it...my kids can listen to it. I don't listen to anything crazy. My dd is far more conservative than me.

Now I had not heard of Katy Perry....even though I knew that one song Hot n Cold...knew it from the Wii You Can Dance...LOL. Anyway I asked my 12 and 10 year old if they heard of her. They said yes like I was in the Twilight Zone. I asked how and my 12 year old said, "Because she's Katy Perry." LOL.

I forget that my 12 year old has outside influences like church kids...LOL. Oh and is officially in the youth department as a junior high kid. The kids there listen to Katy Perry and Lady Gaga. Oh and Justin Beiber...who I find harmless for the moment...but my dd thinks he's terrible so I dont' have to put thought into that one. lol. Anyway, I was relieved to find out that my dd thought Katy Perry was disgusting and in her mind thought just because Katy Perry was Katy Perry she should not have been on SS. LOL.

OH and I have to say that SS shot the scene knowing what she was wearing. I have no clue if the chick picked her outfit or not...but SS approved it. Either they should have had the good sense to make her put clothes on or stick by their decision. Wimps. (I say that as someone AGAINST her outfit but I did love the performance.)

Why does everyone keep saying SHE should have chosen a better outfit with less showing.... Wouldn't Sesame Street have been who chose the outfit? I say it's more of a bad decision on SS's part than Katy Perrys. IMO

ETA: I saw nothing wrong with it. You couldn't see anything & I honestly think some people wake up & look for something to get offended about. Sounds like a great life. (sarcasm)

Exactly. SS has wardrobe people I'm sure. They came up with the skit and they put her in that costume. While I do think she could have been more covered up for a preschool show, it wasn't her fault.

I also agree that some people look for things to offend them.

She could have told them that she wouldn't wear what she wore. What we do or choose to do is also our fault. JMHO

    I agree.

You have got to be kidding.

So SS asks someone to do a spot on the show with Elmo, they give her a costume and script and Katy Perry is supposed to say "Oh no! I can't wear this on a preschool show!" Seriously?
