Oh, and about "TY" he started out on a show on HGTV called trading spaces, he was the "wood working guy" he made great wood projects for the designers. Every time he was on a show it was a very popular well watched show. (The guy is a teen heart throb) but also seams to be a real well liked guy by every one. He also designs some home ware and its sold at Sears (Sears also is a big contributor to the extream make over show) his pictures are up at Sears near his bedding and stuff and in the Sunday ads. In the Extream make over home edditon show one family gets a home makeover or even a brand new home, sometimes the builders (totally run by vulenteer contractors) raise money for the kids to go to college, or they help the family in some way. But its not just the show people all over the country are getting the excitement of the "doing for others bug" and helping people in their town. Its happening here, a teen here needed a new set of lungs, she is getting one from her mom and one from her dad in an operation in CA, but while she will be away recovering from surgery, her class mates (she is in the H. S. band) will fix up her house making it safe for her to be when she comes back home (in Tucson). Since some of you havn't seen the show before here are some of the families they have helped: The first native american woman to get killed in the war was Lori Piestwa she had some young children.... the show went to her family home, it was a tiny trailer. They built her mom, dad, and kids a bigger home but also built a building on the indian reservation for all the other native american soldiers could come to (there were a few remaining code talkers on that reservation. One guy was shot and paralyzed by a drive by shooting and mistaken identity, they made over this families house because it wasn't weelchair excessable and in very bad shape (I think they had hired a contractor and the contractor made the house worse, but that could have been something from a different show) but any way, at the end they threw a wedding for the young man and his fience because he couldn't afford a ring or anything. One family they helped adopted some "unadoptable children" but they couldn't adopt any more because they didn't have the room. They gave them a bigger house including a spare room that could be for 2 more adopted kids. They even decorate the rooms according to the likes of each family member. The show is our favorite and I hope it keeps going for a long time.
Amy, Tell your husband thankyou for the compliment! We videoed the show, so I can go back and look and see. I didn't notice that place that you said. My glasses do get dark in the shade but I'm not sure if that was me you saw or not. THey did use some pre-fab, I'm not sure why they didn't use more??! Port Orchard is not on an island. It's on a rather large piece of land that juts up west of Seattle. We are actually the only (I think) place in the U.S. that has fjords like the Scandinavian area (Norway, etc.)! The land from where we live on the east side of that jut of land (we can see Seattle from the hills over here), is about 100 miles across to the Pacific Ocean. We have a rain forest also. It's just beautiful around here! But, sad to say, it's really grown in the 15 years that we've lived here! There's one area that used to have a 4-way stop. There were only 2 stores there: Costco and a piano store. Now they've torn down all the trees and have really built that whole area up. You'd never know it used to be a bit far from the main drag, cuz there's tons of traffic there now and, obviously, signal lights now, no stop signs! Anyway, I'm off the topic...............
I was thninking it was an island because they used a fairy to get to the place. I used to go up to Bremerton a lot but not there.
Amy, did Tinkerbell sprinkle Pixie Dust on them to get them to town? (I'm teasing you!!!) Deena, I just recently learned that there were such things as a Temperate Rain Forest! Everyone hears about the Tropical ones, and you just get ignored.
Where did you live then Amy? I think someone drove the bus up and picked them up at the airport (that's my guess anyway), then, to make it more interesting, they took the ferry across and landed in Bremerton, then drove down to Port Orchard. Port Orchard is between Bremerton, where we live, and Tacoma, where the Tacoma Narrows Bridge is---the one they called "Galloping Gertie" when they built the first bridge! That's okay Jackie, we'll keep it to ourselves!
I was just teasing, Becky! I've done the same kind of thing myself MANY times, and am sure I'll do it again!
Ohhhhh, Becky, you got us. Shall we slink away and accuse no more?! Actually it wasn't an accusation, just a funny thing, but I liked how you brought that in.
I mis spell things........thats just my specialty. When it counts though I try to use a dictionary. However in the begining of the show you see the big huge bus being taken off the ferry. Deena, I lived in Spokane, my mom lived on the other side of the state (two different towns at two different times) and my cousin lived in Bremerton, her husband was on the Nimitz (which I got to go on during their family day) We moved 4 1/2 years ago, our little Eva was only 6 mo. old, was teething, breastfeeding and we were driving in the bumpiest U-Haul ever with her while my mom and Aunt (whom still lives there) flew with the other 3 kids here. My husband got a stomach virus, I don't drive and the printed directons from Map quest took us through Zion national park, through a windy mountian where only one vehichle may pass at one time....... and we had to pay for visiting the park even though we were just driving through............ Now we live in the DESERT where it is hot, dusty, and miserable, all to be closer to my mom. Sorry for the ranting...I'm done.
Wow Amy, What a trip! I don't really trust Map Quest, it often sends people off on little tangents--some of which work, and some of which DON'T work! We called to have pizza delievered, and they said they knew where we lived. But 45 minutes later there was still no pizza. 1 hour later we got a call from them. Map Quest had sent them to this other road to get to our road, but that other road doesn't even go through to ours! It was crazy! But we got free breadsticks! Hey, does your cousin live in Bremerton still? If so, I think it's high time you come visit her! AND, while you're at it, you could visit me too! Okay?! Yeah, they did go on the ferry, I think for looks as much as anything---makes it more interesting, ya know?! It was a good show, and they really are a great family! They had them on a local show here today called "Northwest Afternoon". They talked to them all about what happened, and even got Preston on the phone at one time, and Ty on the phone at the end. That was pretty cool.
It all sounds cool and I am so glad you got to be a part of it all. Their kids seem very special too.
No, my cousin and her husband split up, but they moved from Bremerton as soon as they could, she really missed the rest of the family that lives in Spokane. And yes we did take a ferry once, it was kind of fun. When I was pregnant with the twins, my husband and I went to visit my mom & step dad, we went to Seattle and saw some stuff my husband always wanted to see, including the air and space museum. It was our only "vacation" before we had kids.
Deena, Just curious about the show - what do they do with the furniture and other household items that are already in the house?
We did Yahoo's map thing the other day. (DH is big into getting his directions there!) It was down right WRONG!!! We were going to an inn in another town. Route 33 use to go straight through town; now it bypasses the town COMPLETELY and there's a Business 33 that follows the old route. Well, the directions told us to take "33". Which we did. Which, of course, was WRONG! The business 33 was an exit, and it didn't say ANYTHING about exiting. Plus, the new route has been in since September; I expected them to not be four months behind!
 Deena, I looked for you but didn't see you. I told Mr Wonderful one of the girls from the forum was going to be on TV.He sat in there and watched it with me.He bought me a chair so I wouldn't have to sit in the floor  So thoughtful.Don't have much furniture yet, but, I am in the house
Crystal, If the item has special meaning, they work it in to the new arrangement somehow--maybe not in it's original form, but it's there. Otherwise they get rid of it somehow, but I'm not sure what they do with it. In the case of this house, everything was probably burned or something! Skippy, If you looked at the previous posts, you probably saw what I said about how much they cut out of what I saw them filming, and how I was in the background of a couple of shots in the room where they gave speeches and turned over the keys. I honestly thought that one was the least likely, cuz I stood more at the back. One lady just wouldn't move out of the way, even when the camera director was telling people to move. She totally ignored everybody asking her to move, cuz she was hoping she had a prime spot. She kind of did, but it took a lot of work for others to get around her on the stairs and out of the way for the filming! So silly. It seems she was there more for herself than to help! Everybody else was really nice! Oh, except for one lady, she was a real, ummm, bear! She had an in charge job for one day, but was so rude to us lowly "Blue Shirts" that people complained, I think. She wasn't there again, that I ever saw. What was the point of that, I wonder? There were a lot of other people in charge that were VERY nice, which under the stressful conditions, was much appreciated, and just helped things run so much more smoothly! They really are into teamwork, not "ME" work!
I have seen where they do some houses that have usable appliances and cabinets and doors and light fixtures they donate it to habatat to humanity.
Don't they move some stuff to the basement because they don't fix up the basements normally, if they have them...like furniture possibly?
