I was wondering if anyone was interested in a thread where we could support each other in our attempts to lead a more healthy lifestyle? Where we could brag about the pounds we've lost or how much more fit we've become. Share tips and websites, that sort of thing.

My only concern is that the focus be on lifestyle change and healthy eating rather then say, diets.

And of course I'm proposing this because I'm doing it. :) I started 3 weeks ago. I've been tracking what I eat and concentrating on nutrtion and portion size and exercising at least 30 minutes a day. I've lost 8 pounds so far (though at least half of that was water when I started drinking enough each day), am now over the period where I'd wake up sore from exercise and actually jogged a bit yesterday without feeling winded.

The funny thing is that although before I thought this would be hard, I'm really enjoying it.

I'm in. I don't have a lot of pounds to lose, but I have a lot of inches. I'm going to join the Y again and need some accountability. This is a great idea!

Good job on doing so well in your first couple of weeks!

I'm hoping Curves will be having a Back to School special next month! I was noticing how close it was to where my girls have piano lessons, and decided I could to this!!!

I used to use Curves and I loved it. I'd still be going if they had childcare. It's just too hard to coordinate with DH's schedule to only work out when he was home with the boys. That's why I'm going to the Y (and for the scholarship program).
One of the great things about Curves was the accountability. They would call me if it had been a week or more since my last visit. Oh, and the measure-ins. They tracked inches instead of pounds.

Thanks. I've got a long way to go. I started at 277, am 269 and want to get down to 190 (That's the weight I last felt really fit and good at). I'm planning to be that by next September and I'll see how I feel once I reach that goal. Plus, I want to run in an honest to goodness race. Our community has a 5k (a little over 3 miles) run on evert Canada Day so I'd like to take part in that next summer.

Not lofty goals but attainable I think. Especially since I changed my attitude from,"I can't do this because..." to, "I am doing this." I guess I already have acheived one goal...educating myself on nutrtion and fitness and putting that to use in my life.

I'm in. I would like to lose about 60 pounds, but more than that, I would really like to make sure that my family and me are eating healthy.

I have used fitday.com in the past to track food and exercise. I guess I need to be more consistent with it.

I use a program, Diet Power. It does the same thing. It also tracks water intake and overall nutrition so I know if I'm getting too much sodium or too little protein or Vitamin c.

I might be able to offer up some tips

I'm just in the process of renewing my personal trainer certification and also studying for my Registered Nutritional Health Practitioner designation as well.
I'm not a fan of fad or calorie restrictive diets either. Lifestyle change is the way to go!

I just found this and thought it might be useful. It's a free online weekly planner that you print out and fold into a book. Then you throw it away at the end of the week.
How is this applicable to this thread? Well, one of the options is a Daily Food Diet. I thought that, since many of you were talking about tracking your intake, this would be handy to carry with you when you leave the house.
Go here and click "create pocket mod" (top right). Then click on "organizers" and you'll see the drop down includes a Food Diary.

I am in! I need to lose 25-30 pounds. I have been having a terrible time keeping up with working out and a routine. I eat pretty decent but sometime over do it on pasta...or ....I will admit...eat whatever on days I think I am fat and there is nothing I can do about it...or eat this now because next week I will start again. UGH. I used to work out 2x a day and was in pretty good shape. Now, I am 30 pounds overweight and out of shape. I want a better lifestyle and health. I also want to look and feel good again.

I am in. I would like to lose 40 lbs, I'd feel great about that! I could probably even lose another 15 after that.

Amie, my parents bought us a one-year membership at the Y a few years back. I was walking a half-hour at least twice a week, and usually more like four times, when the kids and I came down with head lice  ! Of course, I couldn't go then, and was never able to get back into the routine.

I had a Y membership for a year but had to cut it because of finances. That's why I'm applying for a scholarship this time. Pride be d*mned.

    I'm not sure!

I was thinking a few things. Maybe share our goals and then check in weekly for progress reports. Share tips and stuff that work and motivate us. Maybe spill any excuses for not eating right and exercising we have so that the rest of us can offer help and/or thoroughly debunk them. Serious intervention if someone is considering a fad diet for a speed weight loss. :D

Maybe discussing what we'd like it to be would be a good start. Personally, I want some cheers and the opportunity to cheer on others. :)

That was exactly what I needed! I don't want to track calories and such forever but until I have a good idea of what a reasonable diet should be I need something like that to carry with me!

    Being a geek the first thing I did when I started was hit the internet. Here's my list of stuff I've found that's been helpful;

Diet Power - I already mentioned this. It's my food tracker software. It's a little expensive but has a 15 day trial.

Portion Estimator chart - From the Diet Power site. It has a good list of foods and how to estimate portion sizes in ounces.

    Food File -
It also displays detailed nutritional information. With this and a journal you could track your food easily.

Women Workout Routines - This is where I started, working out with these videos and cans of cream corn for weights. You can download the videos for free by right-clicking the title of each video and then clicking 'save target as...' They're certainly not proffessional but they're good workouts.

Yourself Fitness - this is my current favourite. You can get this for XBox, PS2 and PC. You fire it up, enter your stats and goals and do a little fitness test and then the program, through a virtual trainer (Maya), builds routines for you to do daily. They have a lot of variety and I find it fun to have someone there, even if she's is just a collection of pixels, cheering me on. The program will even build a menu plan for you but I don't use and have heard it's much too low on calories and good fats. I'm sticking with Maya at least until I can fit a real gym membership into our budget.

Fitness Jumpsite! A great collection of articles on everything fitness related from buying equipment to making ground beef leaner.
