This is not movie based but off of the barbies. When my ds was about 4 or 5 he wanted a Ken type doll. I lucked out and found him a basketball player one but I still remember him asking me was it okay not to tell the other kids (it was a Christmas present) about the gift. I had no problem with it but I did joke that if Ken "was black, had a bald head and was named Michael" that it would have been okay. My son was never feminine, he just liked the various action figures, trolls, etc and I am blessed that all of my kids had good imaginations. I could give them a cardboard box and they would find something to do!
My hubby is the same way. He is very sterotypical. I am too to a certain extent, but not near as much as hubby.
I agree...I have faith not religion and I don't make decisions based on other people's opinions. It's best to investigate before jumping on the bandwagon. I am not a sheep blindly following my leader to slaughter I am an intelligent human being that needs to get the information first before making a decision that is right for me. Not everything everyone says is fact, just opinion. Just my two cents.
my only reason for not wanting to see it is it gives him the title of "Almighty" far as i know there is only one Almighty out there.. they could have called im mighty Id have been okay, it just kinda rubbed me the wrong way. could be an okay film and all that. I just dont want to see it. I watched all those "Oh God" movies before I was a Christian btw, and they were good to push me to want to know who God was really.. and if He was real and all that, so hopefully God will use Bruce as well.
That's funny! Most Ken dolls are feminine looking. My oldest daughter worked at a toy store for a while and she bought Ems a masculine looking Ken doll. I was surprised. The last manly Ken doll I set eyes on was my Ken doll that I had as a child. He had facial hair and was dressed in blue pants and a light blue collar shirt, with brown work boots. I wish I still had him. Patty
My hubbys objecton to them is the fact that Barbie is "perfect" In a society that pushes looks over personality, hubby doesn't see the reason for one more influence. He wants our daughters to remember where beauty really comes from. On my part, I had Barbies, and never had a problem, but I am choosing to support his decision on it. I won the My Little Pony debate, so I am gonna give on this one!
Oh yeah, He says Barbie isn't reality, to which I say neither is GI Joe, which my hubby would STILL watch if we had the reruns!
I can't wait for the new book. I put a hold on a copy from the library. We can't buy it right now. But I think I want to read it more then my son does. He really likes Harry but I think I'm the BIG fan. We have also seen all the movies and now own them. We have all the books but book 6. I'm keeping a look out a garage sales for it.
I guess it is all in perception. We do not perceive Barbie as "perfect" in the least. To us, she is a plastic doll and how the children play with her is what determines the persona she takes on. I agree about GI Joe. His body is so sculpted and perfect. If I had a son, I would still be alright with him playing with it. But every parent can decide for their children what they will and will not play with. For us Bratz are so out of the question. As for Emma's perception of beauty, she knows that she is a beautiful creation of God because we treat her as such, every day. So does her dad, which I think makes the biggest difference of all. But I agree, some people do have self esteem problems and Barbie can be a symbol of perfection. Just look at the lady who has had over 20 somthing plastic surgeries to look like Barbie. That is crazy! Patty
I keep a look out for it too, for you. we have them all. I know I have seen them at garage sales before, I will look again for you..
I was a kid in the 70's so I had my Barbies, my brother's GI Joe's and also his storm troopers from Star Wars and they all took vacations together in the big camoflauged GI Joe jeep or the millenium flacon!! Sometimes my plastic army men would line up and attack them all. I have never though Barbie was perfect. If any real live person had her measurements they would surely be a freak. Barbie is so increadibliy unrealistic looking. I agree that it is all in perception.
I agree. I never thought that either growing up, because my parents never made a big deal about it. Sometimes it's only a big deal when people make it a big deal.
This is so cute! It reminds me of my cousins. They would bring there GI Joe dolls when they came to visit. The girls would play with their Barbies while the boys played with GI Joe. Once, we were playing in the back yard and the wood pile was their cabin. Our cat decided to invade the cabin and attack the Barbies. Well, my cousins decided to put GI Joe to the rescue. It was so fun. GI Joe defeated the cat and send him running and Barbie and her friends went back to cabin life.  Patty
I have to agree with Jenpooh and Monkeymamma, if you make a big deal about it then they will too. I said something to my dd's about it today they have barbies growing up and they said they never even thought of it that way... I think it's how we make it out..
Patty that is funny!!! I know I used to have the best time loading them all up in the big amry type camo jeep and go running off pushing it down the sidewalk. I'm not sure what everyone else thought though. Baries and storm troopers in a GI Joe jeep????? Great memories! I know we all have our own ideas of what is right and what is wrong and what we will and will not allow. Some people think like me and some don't. What is so great is that we can all talk about it without anyone getting their panties in a wad!!!!! Mutual respect is a fabulous thing.
