Oh yes, the older kids get to watch stuff the younger ones don't. Yep.

My kids loved Pirates....I don't really care for that style of movie, neither does dh...but I don't see anything wrong with it....

Probably goes along with the age appropriateness.

Now my ds LOVES the Star Wars movies. And The Lord of the Rings...again, one I think I would let my kids watch if they were interested in it, but we just don't care for that style.

We did Bridge to Terabithia as a project. Joyce read the book and then I surprised her with a trip to see the movie. It has just came out and we normally only go to the $1.50 movies or get them from the library so that was a treat. We both loved it and just got it from the library and she watched it again. She also watched the original but was not impressed. She had fun making her own "Terabithia" that turned out really cute. Too bad I don't have a digital camera!

I loved the first Pirates movie, but I really didn't care for the second. But....I'm a Johnny Depp lover. :D

I wish they had Star Wars curriculum! LOL

IF they did I think DS would put more effort into school, because he knows every detail about starwars!

my kids watch the older cartoons but I mostly make them watch the ones on PBS, I love that they have strawberry shortcake on the weekends. My DS still likes Bob the Builder too. No power rangers. There are some cartoons and shows we don't let them watch.

Depends on the directors point though doesn't it? It was used in Never Cry Wolf to show a character embracing the wild. In Pret a Porter to make an ironic comment on fashion. In Clash of the Titans to show a couple of tender moments (breastfeeding and a walk on the beach) between a mother and child. In Shindler's List to show people completely at the mercy of evil. And yes, it can be used to arouse sexual feelings that may be key to scene in a movie.

I think it's absolutely fair to not want to see movies with nudity in them though. Although I used to be an absolute gore hound and horror movie fiend when I was a kid I have a very hard time watching that stuff now and tend to avoid stuff with gory scenes. It probably means I miss some great movies but I don't think I'd enjoy them anyway.

My daughter saw them when she was 5. :) We made a point of watching all the special features afterward and discussing special effects so that when she saw an orc being decapitated it she'd understand the effects behind it.

But...Catherine is a very skeptical and logical thinker. She watches movies with an eye to the workings behind the dialogue and effects. When she sees the flying orc head she gets that it is a model head with tubes, a pump and fake blood. I was the same way as a kid. My son buys into movies completely and I don't let him watch the same movies I let Catherine watch.

Just watched Bridge to Terrabithia and really enjoyed it. No cursing and no nudity. I almost cried toward the end.

Any cartoons my kids watch are either on DVD or PBS due to not having cable. My kids are not into Harry Potter. Never read the books or saw the movie.

I'm like dawninns - used to love gore and be a horror fiend like you wouldn't believe. Now I still like scarey movies but the gore turns me off big time. I also agree with dawninns about nudity in some movies like the ones she mentioned above. Especially Shindler's List. However I don't want anything like that shown on TV in the middle of the afternoon when my kids are sitting right there.

I also do not allow my kids to watch Family Guy or American Dad. My husband thinks they are funny but I think they are crass and tacky. If the kids are in bed then dh gets to watch it but if they are still awake I aks dh to turn it off or turn the channel.

Oh I really like King of the Hill though and let my kids watch that all the time. Typical middle class Texas family. Favorite quote from the show: "When I grow up I'm going to sell propane and propane accessories. If my grades are good enough." Sorry I think that show is great!

Many moons ago when I took little Kevin to see the Power Rangers movie, I was disgusted that almost every scene somehow included a shot of the Pink Ranger's butt!! They showed her bending over so much it was stupid.

I guess IMO, no. I think the same point can be made with different angles to hide the "goods", or a simple loin cloth with do. :D

A little off the subject...ok...well...sort of.

have any of you watched the TV show "The Office"?

Oh my goodness....that is probably our favorite show! We are watching it right now and it just cracks me up! That type of humor is exactly how we are. My ds12 even has that type of humor. Very dry and off the wall!

    I love Bridge To Terabithia!!!:D
I read the book when I was in school and cried near the end. When they came out with the movie, I was reminded how much I enjoyed the book. The movie closely follows the book. Ems read the book and enjoyed it too. I think the book is a classic.

we used to be really strict about tv. But relaxed a lot so I guess I'm the odd woman out here lol.

She doesn't like cartoons all that much- unless it's Spongebob.

She watches Little House on the Prairie
    Bonanza
    Gunsmoke

movie wise she's seen all the Harry Potter movies thus far- has this way of seeing Voldemort as Satan, Dumbledore as God, and Harry as Jesus- in her abstract way of seeing things, that's how she sees the symbolism in the movie even though it's not intended to be that way.
We have Shrek, Nanny McPhee, A Series of Unfortunate Events, ect.

We all watched Night at the Museum together and she loved it.

She doesn't know any curse words so if one does pop up she doesn't even know what it is, and if she asked we'd tell her.

mostly she watches Animal Planet, Discorvery and TVLand though. Movies don't come out much anymore except for on family movie night.
