Leslie, I graduated from Bowling Green. That's why I know that area fairly well! I student taught in Grand Rapids, Ohio. And I can sing..... "Back in Lucas County, where the Maumee River flows Going through Ohio, off to where nobody knows....." (In case you don't know, that's "Buckey", which is the official song of the Lucas County Fair.
How cool! I didn't actually grow up here myself...I grew up in Lorain. My dh grew up in Toledo though. Ohio G'ma...I am glad your dh is safe. Sorry to hear he is so tired though. Still praying! Try to have a good Valentine's Day!
Thank you, thank you, thank you for all your prayers. They let dh come home early. He is safe at home in bed for a loooooong night sleep.
Am so glad he's home now! I understand they need to get the roads clear, but they must understand that it's not safe being on the roads so long, especially under such conditions! Ava, my g'ma grew up in Elyria. I visited my great-aunt there a lot when I was a kid. She would tell me about how she and g'ma would go to Lorain to pick up sailors!!!
Snow in NE Ohio Here are a few pictures of the snow. The kids are having so much fun. Dh is sleeping, SNOOOORING!!! He is out.
Yay....sweet dreams Ohio Gma's dh!! Speaking of snow...your pictures are so cute. My dd10 played out in the snow for 5 hours with only one little break to eat a piece of pizza and go potty!!! She had a ball!
I've been running all day and just got a chance to read this thread today. We were blessed last night and the storms were down to t-storms by the time they reached us. Thanks for the prayers! I am glad to hear that everyone is doing well. You gals have been heavy on my mind all day. I talked to my mom and brother this evening and at 7:00 my brother estimated they had 30 inches of snow. My mom said she didn't remember snow like this since they got married about 45 years ago. They married on Feb. 11 and actually got snowed in somewhere. My brother only lives about 5 miles from my folks but he was stuck at their place. SOMETIMES I miss the snow but not at times like this! The year I joined the Army we had 20 inches in mid-April and my mom reminded me awhile back about the snow storm that killed the lilacs and we didn't have any for Memorial Day. I was to young to remember that that was in May but I do remember how high the snow was. We may get crazy summers down here but up there we would have snow from Oct. - June. Anyway, I'll keep the prayers coming and hopefully everyone keeps their power!
Things are back to normal here. It's 6:30, the kids have eaten, Rachael's practicing piano, I am right where I belong (computer), and Carl's going out to try and de-ice his car. The snow plows came by last night (!!!), and almost all schools are running normal, at least where I am. I must say that I was REALLY IMPRESSED with how quickly the roads have been cleared! When it hit, I expected most things to be shut down until the weekend. THe "road warriors" (as one local news station dubbed them!) did a tremedous job. G'ma, thank your DH for me! (Or better yet, YOU can give him a big hug and smooch!!!)
Jackie....your g'ma and my aunt probably knew each other! (My aunt is about 80...so...she is up there in age.) My aunt used to get pick up sailors in Lorain. I actually grew up in Lorain. My parents now live in Elyria. The roads here are looking good! Progress is a beautiful thing. I just hope we don't get more snow! However, my kids did have a blast playing in it. I still don't have a dig camera...so when I get pics developed I will share. I think I will finally get a dig camera with the tax return. My dh says we will every year and then doesn't want to spend the money. Why? Because he always has to look at the one that costs as much as a small car. lol. I just want a simple, decent one...geesh.
My dad was born in 1933, so I would assume my g'ma and her sister were born around the turn of the century. So they would be older than your aunt! Did you ever see the bears at Cascade Park? Aunt Elizabeth lived just around the corner from the park, on Furnace Street. There's a cave, right under the bridge, with a lot of names and grafiti on the walls. One of the names is that of g'ma's brother, Uncle Bill, whom I never met (but sure heard about!).
Thanks again for all the prayers. Things are pretty much back to normal here too, except the kids are off school yet. They have been off everyday except Monday. Tomorrow is an in-service day. They have 1 Friday off every month. Too cold for them to go. It is noon and still windchill is minus 3. My husband got hugs and kisses last night, but I will give him another one from you Jackie. Anyone else want me to give him hugs and kisses, I will He woke up about 10:30 and stayed up for about 1/2 hour and slept till morning.
You can give him some for me Gma! Tell him we're all grateful for the hard work that he does! I wonder how many lives he's saved?!!!
I told him I had to give him hugs and kisses. I told him you all were praying for him while he was out. He said thank you. He stopped at the Burger King while he was out plowing and 1 guy said "thanks, I appreciate what you are doing" He said that was the 1st time anyone has ever thanked him for plowing the streets in 29 years of doing it. That made me think of all the other people who do jobs that help us through our daily lives that we need to thank.
Deena, he drives the sweeper truck. He works for the street department sweeping the streets. They have a festival in Aug. and he works the whole weekend - he blocks off the streets and stands there letting the vendors in and out, then he sweeps the street after the festival. My dh loves his work. While he is driving his truck he listens to the Bible on tape. He gets through the Bible quit a few times during the year. He calls it a cake job. Winter is a little rough on him since he has gotten older. He will retire next year. Not sure what he'll do then. I can't wait. Maybe I can convince him to buy an RV and go around the country for a year and visit all the hs er's from this forum. Like my dgd would say, that would be fun.
Ya know, it does make one wonder about all the jobs we take for granted. This guy at church makes his living plowing snow...I think I will thank him on Sunday. I am going to be more aware of the people who do the work that keeps our communities running for us! I mean, what would we all do without those who plow the snow?!
