And I'm the opposite, Brooke! I assume that things are MORE EXPENSIVE in rural America, because there's not as much competition. I know that the gas is more the further you get from town. We've considered buying a cow...found a HS'ing family that raise them not too far from us. She said we'd be able to come and "visit" it any time we wanted! But I think it's too late for that now. DH put it off too long!

We've been buying our beef 'bulk' for a while now and believe me - it saves on the grocery bill in a big way. We raised a pig last year (some of you might remember the hilarious story that went with it one day). We will do the sam ehti syear.

Just last week, we were able to get itn on the McCain's sale (McCain's is the big supplier of french fries). Anyway, we usually get our pizza pockets in bulk (100 per box) and french fries too. This time I saw carrots on the list - I figured a box of individual bags (maybe a pound or so)... yeah right - a 40 lb box with one great big bag of frozen carrots so we had to bag them oursleves - it was still far cheaper than buying them in the stores. With all the prices rising so shaprly, we've really become more economically aware of what we spend on groceries and we're trying to cut corners wherever we can.

Jackie, if you go directly to a beef farmer, they may be able to come up with something decent for you...

That might be true, Jackie, for "rural" being slightly out of a booming metropolis, but out here there just aren't any big cities. I live in this area's largest city and people come from an hour away or more to do their shopping. My town is only about 30-40,000. Lots of people moving out because of factory closings, too. Things have to be cheaper or nobody could afford to live. Also, many commodities originate in the midwest so those are cheaper for lack of shipping.

My mind is not working well right now, so clue me in on what you'd be doing with a cow.

Brenda I rememeber when we lived in IL they had that for onion rings, french fries and vegs. too. When they would open the door for the public about twice a year to come and buy there products. Wish I could find that down here. Maybe I need to look harder. LOL we use to buy bulk all the time the only way to go now days. Thats why we are members of Sam CLub right now.

McCain's used to open their sales to the public a couple times a year, but they haven't done it in a long time now. (We have a couple family members - cousins who work there and that's how we get in on it - employees get the sale every two weeks).

Actually they have it weekly - one week from Florenceville (head office) the next week Grand Falls (a warehouse - of McCain's) - I don't order from Grand Falls because by the time you drive there to get the stuff (and hour away) you're not really saving anything.

OK... so the cost of crude oil is down to 64. (something) per barrel why isn't it reflected at the pumps or is this the case of absolute GREED! (I tend to think so). Maybe it is down state side - I haven't been over since last weekend... it certainly isn't down here !!!!!!!!!!!

It's down a few pennies here. The rule seems to be raise it 15, lower it 4. Raise another 10, lower another 2. Yes, those few pennies add up, but not as quickly as the "extra" quarters per gallon the gas companies are getting!

It's down about 12 cents a litre in Fredericton (the capital city an hour away from us). I hope and pray that trend follows suit for us as well (OH! This is post number 1000!!!!!)

What a drop... $13 a barrell and all of 4 cents per litre here - that's disgusting!

On that note, truckers around ehre are protesting in a big way right now. They're parking their trucks on the highway basically bringing traffic to a stand still. It will affect businesses as well because many are not getting their shipments in. Some businesses have already closed their doors because they have run out of supplies...

At the border, they were allowing absolutely no commercial trucks to get through the border (they're parked along that road too). They have there barbeques out and all. They were allowing small vehicles through but they were going to put a halt to that too by tonight.

They're trying to get support and stop traffic...getting them to sign petitions (for which they are getting good results, I'm told).

And this has been an educational moment for the boys... they didn't understand it so we were able to teach them that the cost of gas affects even the groceries that we buy at the store...

Every few cents help. We hope it comes down more. We rejoiced over $2.89 in another town last night and stopped to fill up before driving back to our town 40 mins away. In our town still close to $3.

Oh my Lord! Mom sent me an email a little while ago about gas prices going up here to $1.84/litre then I received a phone call - Forget the $1.84 (as sick as that is, it would still be a bargain) - it's going up well above $2.70 a litre (which would equate to about $10.21 a gallon  ). Make you want to vomit or what!

I've been hearing for the past three days that the prices were going up because of Rita. But actually they've been going DOWN here! Go figure! And how is it that the prices on our side of town is $.10 more than where DH works, a half-hour away? We're talking ALL the stations, just not one or two.

Yeah right! They drop the prices a little bit before they jack them up - at least that's what they do around here anyway! You should see the line ups around here - it's insane!
