TMom, what do your kids do online? Interlibrary loan? Or was this referring to a different topic?

We can't do interlibrary loans on-line, but we can do everything else. I get e-mail notification for myself, Carl, and my younger two children. Rachael asked that the e-mail notification be sent directly to HER. I also get notified when books are due, and when reserves come in, and can make "normal" reserves.

TMom! Wow! That would revolutionize our accessing of resources! Is interlibrary loaning to your home very expensive? I can hardly believe this!

Jackie, what do you get e-mail notification about?

Our library is set up so that when a book you have on reserve comes in, they send you an e-mail. When a book comes due, I get an e-mail the day before. If something is overdue, they send me an e-mail. It's really made my life a lot easier, even though I'm trying to keep track of EVERYONE's account!

'Can't wait 'till Monday, when our library will be open for a few hours! I wonder if that is available in every state or not, & we will find out. It costs us $2 for every item we interlibrary loan through our local lib. It's just now soaking in what you said--the books, videos, etc. still come to your local library, right? If they do, I wonder if the $2 charge will still apply. I'm guessing it will...

Yes, I would assume the charge will still apply. We don't get charged for interlibrary loans (yet!). I once asked if there was a limit per year, and if there was the librarian didn't know. I figure if there is, we've got five cards in our family...... I think the e-mail feature will depend on the library. I use the Columbus Metropolitan Library mostly, though it's not the only one I have a card for. It's pretty extensive, so it has lots of "perks". Smaller systems may not have the money to invest in the technology to have e-mail notification.

Prairie, I will sit down at my computer with MOH, and type all those great reference books into the library ssytem from home. That way, I can pencil in all the call numbers of the ones the library has, and will mark which ones are available at the branch I most often visit. Then when I need it, if it's not at my branch I can request it and have it sent there. I do the same with videos, etc. All from home!

I would be broke if they charged for inter-library loans here! I know my sis said they charge $.50 up her way in NY but here it is free. Some nights when I can't sleep I go as far as looking up dvds alphbetically. A few weeks ago we had over 40 holds for books and dvds. We are blessed with a library system that is very up-to-date.

I don't know how up to date ours is, and it certainly doesn't have all the perks that Jackie's has, but we do have free inter-library loans! I didn't know some places charged for that! We can check out and return library books to any of the libraries in the system, and it's fine, they just truck it to the library it belongs to!

As i said before, my library is a very large system. Like Deena, I can request a book from any library in our SYSTEM and have it sent to "my" library. The same with videos and DVDs and music. When I say "Interlibrary Loan", I am talking about BOOKS ONLY that the system doesn't have a copy of. Our library will look for it at other libraries OUTSIDE of our system. This only works for books, and there's special rules. For one thing, you cannot renew it, and the overdue cost is $2.50/day. Also, I'm given the book in a special envelope, and they expect that envelope returned, too. One time, I had two books, and I got the envelopes mixed up, and BOY! did I find out!!! (But she understood and worked with me!) I've received books from as far away as Kansas!!!

Ohhhhh, okay. Our library calls it interlibrary loan for getting the books from other libraries in our system. I'm sure ours would charge for it if it was outside of our system! Another reason I should move to Jackie's trailer, so we have better library options! :D

Jackie, Do your kids make the notebooks like Linda Hobar suggests? Just wondered how that has gone for you. My kids have notebooks, but they're in basically chronological order instead of geographic order.

We did our Ancient History the way she suggested. Rachael also has one for Medieval history, because she's doing it with her group. With my younger two, they don't have one. I'm pretty much just reading it to all three, and not doing much of the activities this year. It's too difficult with Rachael taking the class, too.

Jackie & Deena, am I ever sitting here with bulging eyes! I don't know anything about "systems" or which sytem our library would be associated with. The library is only open certain hours on three days a week; so sometimes we plan our schedule a little bit around that. Tomorrow is one of the open days. Now, hoping the main librarian is in, I will set right out to educate myself! Wow! It would save us a TON of fees if we could do this ourselves! How I appreciate this conversation!

(We're not totally recovered from the last ice-storm yet, & another is predicted; so if we're off electricity again, don't think I've lost interest in this topic for a minute!)

TMom, that is so kind of you! Now, if I can just verbalize what I'm needing to know, tomorrow. I'll try to get back in a timely manner. Thank you so much!
