Oh, of course there are whales in the Atlantic, too!!! When I was young and single, my friend and I went whale watching off of Cape Breton Island, in Nova Scotia. Had a LOVELY time, with this little French-Canadian "captain". My friend and I were the only two on his boat, and I had an opportunity to practice my rather poor French on him.

Hey, a few years ago this town I live in was international news! A whale pod had wandered into an inlet---we can drive 2 minutes and get to that inlet, and we could see the whales right next to our little town! Next thing you know we have masses of people and cars coming from Japan and other countires to see these whales! It was pretty amazing! The road getting into this little town is one lane each way until you get inside the town. What a traffic mess that was!hotels totally booked, restuarants jam-packed full! It was great for business! :) But it was awesome to see the whales so nearby! (and we're not even on the coast!)

I know abotu that one Deena, and I kinda consider the Sound as the Pacific cause they are conected, so cool though!
We had a whale in teh delta/bay area before, a hump back, Whale, they even named a restaurant after it, Humphrey's
they have the news paper articles up and stuff, really cool,

My mom used to live in Sechelt BC, she could stand on her balcony and watch whales (Orca's) go by the straight she lived on. By tthe Trail islands. and Vancouver Island. it was so cool!

My suggestion: Check out what is in your state, there are probably a lot of cool things you may not have seen! And in some cases, it is closer than driving to another state!

I KNOW!!! I'm so excited about the Alamo too!!! Last summer, dd8 and I had a great trip home to East TN to see family and also planned an early homeschool history unit field trip to the birthplace of Davy Crockett, which is also in East TN! We'd actually been to that park a couple of times for family picnics/reunions, but dd (now 8) was only a toddler then. We learned just about everything we could about Davy Crockett and I even put together a road trip journal for her to work in to record memories, interesting facts, and so on. My DAD REALLY got into the whole idea (dd8's Granddaddy) and just kept rolling with it! We even spent an entire day visiting the homeplace of and learning all about Andrew Johnson thanks to Granddaddy's enthusiasm. It was wonderful!

Anyhoooo....we had intended to wrap up our "historical unit" on Davy Crockett last Fall w/ a special trip to San Antonio to see the Alamo and where this brave man met his demise, but dh unexpectedly losing his job threw everything into a tailspin and we had to postpone indefinitely. So I'm DOUBLY thrilled at the prospect of getting to go for many reasons, including CLOSURE for Davy Crockett! Ha!

Sea World also has a park in San Antonio and though dd8 has been to the one in Orlando, FL...she was only 2 maybe 3, and I would love to take her now that she can really get into it!

Yep! I graduated from LHS--the geographical center of the contenental United States. Instead of Lions Club, it's the "Hub Club," as in the hub of the US. It's the "US Center 4-H Club," etc. A great place! I think we could arrange a meeting for us all right here in the "Bread Basket of the World!"

Kinsley, KS is "Mid-way U.S.A.--half-way between San Francisco and New York. The "Pole-Line Road" still has the original poles (now cut off at about 5') which carried the telegraph line from NY to San Francisco. My husband leads shark teeth digs in a near-by creek bed. There's a lot of history here plus great people. You'd be welcome any time!

'Sorry this is late. I'm just now reading this interesting thread. Yes, AppleOmyeye, I was skinny in those day, too!

I was skinny too! And I've never been to Kansas, so that'd be fun to meet there!

I worked at a Navajo Mission in New Mexico for 2 years, called La Vida Mission. We found many sharks teeth around that area, and guess what the elevation was? 7000 feet! I wonder (NOT!) how those got there?! ;)

yes SA is pretty they have alot of fun things too. The Alamo is pretty, but I was alittle disappointed with it. Guess I thought there would be alot more but there wasn't one lady here in the park told me you have to go to another part of texas where they tape the Alamo and see the buildings that is wonderful.

appleomyeye - check out Schlitterbaun (sp?) . It's somewhere near Austin. It's a fabulous waterpark. I brought my dd there a few years ago along with my sister and niece, it was great! We did have coupons and we also went during a discount time, I can't remember now the details. But if you are in that area and it's warm you might want to check it out.

It is near New Braunfels and a lot of fun but very crowded. There is a new one in Galveston that we plan on checking out this summer. It has a retractable roof.

Anyway I am just now getting back from a long break and wanted to let you know about our family vacations.

We go camping at different state parks. We have found that they are larger, more roomy campsites, cleaner, cheaper, and have more activities than private campgrounds. We tent camp and love it. We go hiking, biking, boating, swimming and horseback riding. Also we plan a day to go to the nearest touristy town and have lunch and do whatever tourist activities we can fit into a day. We are going to Arkansas this year in July.

Many times there are RV/Camping resorts near large tourist attractions or resort areas. Many times these have camping cabins that cost a fraction of what a hotel would and have many more eminities available, including pools, tennis, hiking trails, bond fire and cookout facilities etc.

It's been my experience that both cabins and cheap hotels are a bit "rustic", but I prefer naturally rustic to third world "rustic". If there must be a bug, I much prefer it to be a moth, or a firefly, than a roach. LOL

A lot of campground have rent a tents too. They are all set up and even have cots. You still need to bring your food and sleeping bags and such but there is no set up or tear down. We have never done that but I have a friend that has. We have a huge tent and we enjoy all the aspects of camping.

I agree I would rather have rustic than roaches anyday!

we have a huge tent too, three rooms and a sun room from costco, but I am trying to make sure everyone gets what type of lodging they want and still have a great place for us campers to camp... so i want to go visit the location we will probably get and see if I can work a deal or something too! That would be awesome!
One place has a water slide type pool!

Oh my kids would love the water slide! That sounds like a ton of fun. It would be great if they had a variety of lodging that made everyone happy. Sorry if you said this before (I haven't been here in a couple weeks) but when are you planning on going? We have our campsite booked at DeGray Lake State Park the end of July.
