OK, to bring the discusion back to workboxes, have you guys seen this link? I am starting to forget which links I found where so if this was posted here already ignore me ;)

    http://rubyslippersschool.blogspot.com/2009/03/work-boxes.html

I like this idea alot, it still looks cute, is very visual, but takes up much less space than the traditional workbox idea, and even less than the drawers. It would be easy to take along on a day at the park and probably coule even work for longer trips. Which is something I was considering, although when we travel I usually make up a folder with worksheets from places like learningpage.com instead of our regular work to keep things more fun.

I am setting up a system pretty much the same way as shown here. I cannot wait to see how it will work out. Thanks for posting the link.

Cool, make sure and let us know how it works when you get started with it. Pictures would be great if you can, too.

I am really trying to think this idea through to identify pros and cons and figure out the best way for me to make this work in my family.

I thought about doing it like that - but I think a lot of the books I have for DS are too big for that type of system. Even dd with Apologia science stuff - I don't know if they'd fit!?

me too I would like to see how it turned out !
I so wish I had all this available to me in the begining, I had to come up with my own ideas! lol! Which I apparenntly did okay creatively but today homeschooling has so much more avaialble you who have young ones you are teaching are so blessed!
I am thinkking I may do some adding to mine as well with the extra velcro stuff I have I may make some attached class numbers , my jr higher will like this part. I am thinking for each class being a reward of his level-- likes--- on the attachment?
Like one would have instructions for riding his bike, one or eating ice cream in the middle of the day, one for playing half our of game.. that would be like the special things in your boxes wouldnt it be? I have been trying to figure how to incorporate that into his level..

We have been using the WorkBox System since the beginning of March and LOVE it. I only have one DS, so I went with the regular organizing rack and boxes. Ideally, if money were no object, I probably would get one of those Ikea Trofast storage things...I want them anyway for the playroom, but can't afford them :p Maybe someday.... LOL

Ok, here is one of my folders, I only have 2 done... just need to tape the pocket in the rest. Notice the numbers are not in a "straight" pattern? They will be laid out different in every folder for some variety..

Because I wanted more room to write, I decided to go with 1 full index card folded in half to stuff the pockets with...

I must say that although this makes me find some fun things to add to his day, it takes me an hour to plan out each day :( Maybe if I make myself some general lesson plans for each subject and make a list of fun things for each subject to put in it would make it go faster?

very nicefolders! looks good and I like how you are doing the set up of different order ofthings for variety good idea! As for the lesson planning, I think thats how I am doing it, a general thing how many pages per day I have started. What classes what days of week. Then I am going to have it down to my daily lesson plans he likes and then check off list to see that we did each days work to keep on track with # of days this year

You are so right, those of us with little kids do have SO much available to help us. It is such a fun and exciting stage to be teaching little ones.

My mom homeschooled me for awhile in the 80s and I know she had a really hard time finding stuff alot of the time. We have it so much easier now.

I think those sound like fun things for a boy that age. I was thinking that workboxes would be harder for older kids.

That looks great. I like the fact that you mixed up the numbers for interest. I would hope that getting it planned each day would get faster, but the extra planning time involved is one of the reasons I am concerned about my ability to stick to something like this.

I did some looking at boxes of various kinds today thinking about the things I know I want to put in and I think if I do workboxes (which I am strongly leaning towards) I want to use 12x12 drawers. There will still be some games that don't fit, but I think they would work best for my family. I also don't think I want to do 12 boxes for each kid. I am thinking 9 for my second grader and 6 for my preK/K kiddo.

I'm actually doing what I planned not to do... making a planner for the year. I knew what I wanted to use, and really just wanted to go at our own pace.. but then sometimes that means not doing crap all day long . I figure if I have a general plan laid out then it won't take me so long to fill in the folders.

Really I don't think I need 12 things for my 5th grader, I have been thinking of things I can fill it in with.. and some of it ends up being chores that he can earn money for (he doesnt' get paid for his regular chores which are just feed the dog and take out the trash and recycling). I don't have the time during the day to play games for hours on end.. the baby would never let that happen, and I want to start getting more serious with Rylee and Reagan. I am thinking of making boxes for them... but really think that 4 ziplocks will be enough for each of them a day for now.

DH and I were just talking about a planner for next year, too. It's not my style, but I do need to work on getting more organized, especially if I am officially schooling two instead of one.

I am a bit hopeful that having boxes for both boys will make things go smoother as I try to work more with the younger. But they have a tendancy to be much more interested in whatever the other one is doing than what they are suposed to be doing, LOL.

I find it hard enough to deal with my two. I can only imaging dealing with four with the age range you have. It has to be a totally different balancing act.

I need to take a good look around the house and write a list of all the stuff I can think of to include in the workboxes so that when I start filling them I can just look at the list and grab some stuff.
