I am looking for a chewy sugar cookie, too. The Betty Crocker recipe is too hard texture for our liking. We get delicous ones in a pouch, Pillsbury maybe, that we love but they go too quick. One pouch is not enough!
Well, I'll tell ya, if somebody comes up with one, I hope they'll share, cuz I'd love to have a recipe for chewy! I don't like them hard!
Parents Magazine has a sugar cookie recipe this month. I haven't tried it yet, but when I do I'll let you know the texture. it looks a little hard, but that doesn't mean it has to be. I think if you go to the website you can get it from there. I may not get to try it until next week sometime.
I haven't checked this out yet but a friend of mine said to try www.cooks.com. She said she uses this site alot and maybe they would have a chewy recipe.
soft sugar cookies *not my recipe or MY mom's MOM'S OLD FASHIONED SOFT SUGAR COOKIES 3 1/4 cups sifted all-purpose flour 1 tsp soda 1/2 tsp salt 1/2 cup sour cream 1/2 cup soft butter 1 1/3 cup sugar 1 egg, unbeaten 1 1/2 tsp vanilla or 1 tsp nutmeg Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Sift together flour, soda, and salt. Combine in large bowl, sugar, egg, and flavoring. Add sour cream. Add flour mixture gradually and beat about 2 minutes. Refrigerate fo 1 hour. Roll out on lightly floured surface to 1/4 inch thickness. Sprinkle with sugar and gently roll the rolling pin over the sugar. Cut out. Bake 12 minutes or until golden brown.
I got an electric cookie press. It came with some recipes. The butter cookie one was pretty good. I will say that I felt like a kid playing with playdoh. lol. I was about to throw the thing out the window at one point. lol. However, after keeping true to my perfectionist egocentric character, lol, I finally got some good ones! I was so pround. About 6 good ones out of 24. LOL. I am going to give it another shot though. I finally got really nice looking trees, thought that would be nice for Christmas. I feel the need to master this thing!
I have one stuffed away somewhere, at least I think it's still in there somewhere! I may need to pull it out and give it a shot! YAHOO! Thanks for the recipe Amy!
OK, ladies! We've spent three whole pages discussing cookies, etc., and Amy is the only one who posted a recipe!!! How about if we continue the talking like we've been doing here, and start another thread for Christmas Cookie Recipes? Amy, you might want to copy the recipe you did there and post it on the other thread, too! I've got butter sitting out right now, getting soft, so I can do some tonight (after my kitchen is clean!!!) Last year, I was brilliant, and wrote down the title, author, and call number of a Christmas Cookie Book I got from the library, putting it in a stamped cardstock "envelope" that contains Christmas cookie recipes. I had just begun thinking, "DARN!!! What WAS that good book I got last year?" when I found it, lol! One thing it had was adorable Rudolph cookies, made with chocolate dough, pretzels for antlers, and red gumdrops for his nose! I'll post that when I get the book tomorrow. I also found a chocolate cookie recipe that puts a marachino cherry on top, and then you drizzle white chocolate on top of that. (No, I don't have a thing for chocolate cookies, but these look fantastic!!!) Or we could also post Christmas candy, too!
Jackie & Kris & Deena, my mother made dozens of beautifully designed cookies with a press when I was little. But now I have several presses & can't get a single one to work! She says there's nothing to it, so I'm determined to try again. Betty Collins, I'll do a cookie swap with you, if you want to! I'm hoping to make some cinnamin "cookie" ornaments, which I could include. If others would like to join us, that would make it even more fun! But you can pm me with your address if no one else joins in.
wow, never thought about doing a cookie exchange through the mail. Don't know how well they would ship and you would have to get to work soon to get them out. But, sounds neat. I have done it many times before with other ladies and love it. I wish I could get my cookie press working. Amy thanks for the cookie recipe
I had a cookie press and loved it. The edge of the top piece that holds the design in place cracked and I can't figure out how to replace it. I called the company and they did not sell replacements. That figures!:x Patty
Patty, How do u get yours to work? I can never get mine to come out of the piece to look like a cookie?
Patty, you are welcome to come visit me and play with my press! I think all I need is someone to show me how. I'm not interested in a cookie exchange by mail, but I'll make a suggestion to those of you who ARE! I think you need to add a recipe card for the type of cookie you make to accompany it. We did that once, and it's really a nice touch. That way, if someone gets something REALLY good, you can try it the next year!
Jackie, that is a wonderful idea. I don't know if I will do it or not. The price of postage is what gets you.
Oh, Jackie, thank you so much. We are on our way. See you in a few minutes!   Kris, you can't use any margarine or oil based spreads in the dough. It has to be real butter otherwise it is to sticky. It has to be a recipe for cookie presses. You want a dough that is soft but not sticky in the least. I will look for my instructions to my press. It has some really good recipes that come out each time. Patty
Yaaay Patty! If you can help us get our cookie presses really working, then you'll be a hero! At least in MY book!!!
Jackie, I like the idea of including recipes. Maybe we could include only one or a few of each kind--only our favorites. That would cut down on postage. I'd be happy to wait for next year to do this, because the calendar is really filling up. It just seemed like such a neat idea that I had never tried before. OR maybe more would be ready to try it for Valentine's or Easter or another celebration. I'd hate to leave anyone out, if another time would be better. And if we'd wait, MAYBE we'd get this cookie press skill figured out, & we could show off our beauties! I'll be watching for that recipe. Maybe that's what's wrong with mine.
