I just added to my post. LOL! It means a movie that will be a favorite of people's forever. Like Grease is to some people...you always still hear about the movie. Does that make sense? It's basically just a term used for movies that will always be around and loved, but they do not necessarily fit in the old "classics" category.
OK, am I understanding this right - I asked about Napolean Dynomite - was Euph. answering my question? Is Napolean Dynomite a cult classic. I must have Alzheimer today. Things just aren't clicking LOL
Okay I am like Crystal and JenPooh. I really don't overanalyze it all. I love the Disney movies like Aladin and Sleeping Beauty and Peter Pan!! What is wrong with those? Also witches and warlocks and war - it all depends. The girls know it is all pretend. Unless it is a war movie or documentary we see on PBS. They read the Bible everyday and study it well. If I know I am teaching my girls right and they love the Lord I don't think a fairy tale is going to screw them up. Samantha and I both LOVE Grease. Never seen Napoleon Dynamite.
wow, after reading all these threads I thought I was either a really stupid mom or one that didn't care. I am like JeniPooh, Crystal and Monkeymama, I let the girls watch alot, be we are always with them and if there is to much it's off. Doesn't make my girls bad, they are the sweetest things on earth. In my book.
Oh yeah Kris I am always with them. And really I should say Samantha not them because Grace is only 4 so of course there are things she doesn't get to see that Sam does. Like you said if there is too much it goes off. Doesn't make bad kids. Of course I totally respect each parents deicision to allow their kids what to watch and what not to and I would never allow a child in my home to watch something I know they are not allowed to.
Many things that don't need to be issues only become issues if you let them. Within reason of course. That's my take.
I have to agree with you Monkeymama the same is here. I wouldn't let anyone watch something there parents wouldn't want them to watch. When the girls have sleep over we try not to watch to much tv and then theres no hard feelings.
We don't let the kids watch them because of the amount of magic in them. My hubby is very cautious when it comes to fantasy. It is more than just movies, we don't teach about santa or the easter bunny or the tooth fairy. They are taught that they are not real. I will say that my family and his get very irritated over our choices, but we really feel that this is the way to go for our kids. However, what others do is completely up to them, so please don't think that I think everyone should do it myway. Ohio Gradma From what I've seen of Napolian, I didn't really see anything wrong.. but I've never been able to watch the whole movie. To me, it was a waste of tape, time, money and energy. Can you tell that I just hate the movie?
I think movies like Napoleon Dynomite are in a category all their own. I call it stupid humor. My hubby likes those movies. I do with a few, depending on what it is. They are kind of an "aquired taste", perse.
The kids have been watching it with me and I agree, not any sense, stupid, dumb, waste of time and money, glad I didn't buy it. I wouldn't waste another 2 hours watching it. Half way through, the kids went out and was swimming. They must of thought it was dumb too. My husband also like these kinds of movies too. He watched Dumb and Dumber, a million times (I think) anyway I can't stand it. Elijah likes the action movies - Godzilla, Spider Man, etc. I don't watch too many movies, I let Don determine it he has to turn them off or not. It's a touchy subject here, sooooo I give my 2 cents and let Don make the decision.
I pm'd ya already Peter Pan- I liked this as a kids my kids have seen it once, just not a favorite for them. Bruce Almighty--only dh and I, not the kids. Wizard of Oz--none of the boys here will ever watch it again, they all say it's a girl movie Teenage Mutan Ninja Turtles-never Little Mermaid - no AND what have I been missing out on here! Napolean Dynamite in absolutely NO way will ever be considered anything having to do with Classic:shock:
I agree some of the 'dumb humor' movies are preferred by some of our dh's. What the Christmas one that's really stupid, the star is a boy, his dad wins a prize and it's a leg of a lady with net hose on, and it's a lamp. I haven't only ever seen some of it, I don't like it, my kids won't be watching either.
Ref. cult classics - A cult classic is a cultural artifact (e.g. a movie or TV show) that has attracted a cult following and has been given the status of classic by that following. A cult classic in terms of music can be for example a single that is a heavy "fan favourite", with a very dedicated following by the performer(s) fanbase and is labeled as "classic" by that following, but with very little success outside those people. Another example could be a single that has a very strong following within it's particular genre, and is often labeled as a "classic" by those people, but has enjoyed very little or no crossover success. Cult classic is not necessarily a geographically biased term, as cultural artifacts differ from country to country. I found this on Wikipedia and no I did not tamper with the article!!
Nellie it's The Chirstmas Story another one that my hubby loves and I hate...will not watch it at all ever! He can even quote the dumb thing!
YEP! Some of hubby's favs... Office Space Dumb and Dumber Cable Guy Ace Ventura Happy Gilmore Need I say more?
