We won't let our kids watch Shrek either. Too much adult humor and too much crude humor. Although, honestly, I didn't think Shrek was really for kids anyways?

I don't think the shows with 'adult humor' are actually for kids either.

Isn't there farting humor in Shrek? LOL If I let my kids watch that they would start a dinner conversation all about flatulence.

Hmmmm. . .I suppose I could turn it into a hsing lesson on the digestive system? Or chemistry? LOL

It's true. . .it depends really on the parents more than the kids though I think. . .but I didn't realize Shrek was thought of as a kids movie. Just didn't know. ;-)

    That's true, Kris.

I personally was uncomfortable with Shrek when we saw it when the kids were younger, but we just watched it again on TV the other day and we all thought it was really funny. So, I think the age does play a part in that. I didn't care for the 2nd Shrek at all, but the 3rd one was a little better.

I agree. My kids are 2 and 4, so maybe that's why...

I go to www.capalert.com to get an idea about a movie first. Ratings can be very decieving. Harry Potter stands out as being a no no here. Hated Shark Tale, and happy feet. I am sure more will come to mind.

I agree. . .I think once my kids get past the whole 'farting is funny stage' maybe I'd consider it. I just watched the 3rd one and liked it (not with the kids). I thought it was a lot cleaner than the other two.

Or maybe I have repressed potty and poopy issues from having an infant in residence for 8 years. . .two babies in diapers for 6 years. . .or toilet training the twins.

Tanner loves Cars. A line from the movie:

"I'm racing for the Piston Cup"
"He did what in his cup?".

Thank God he didn't get the joke. I think they throw things like that in there so the adults aren't bored. Heaven help me when I have to sit through dozens of kid movies! EEK!

my son loves Cars to. I didn't catch that joke until several times later. Still glad ds doesn't get it. I'm ok if it's just one time, but when the whole movie has it throughout, it turns me off.
And, just so you know, I thought Happy Feet was boring too, and I like kids movies.

It is funny you mention this. When Shrek came out we had just moved back to the states from overseas. I knew nothing of the movie but the sign looked like a kid movie and I thought it said G. anyway we went and I kept covering the kids ears. LOL They were 3 & 4 so they didn't get it at all but it was just reflex.

It's a no for Wizard of Oz, Pirates of the Caribean, Spiderman, Monsterhouse, Flicka and pretty much 90% of all other moives aimed at kids. Even Charlotte's Web had some parts I was not happy with. It just wasn't as wholesome as the original.
We have 2 lines of defense: Focus on the Family's Unplugged. It gives a review of the movies as far as violence and spiritual content. It doesn't say yes we approve or we don't but it gives you an idea to the content to better help make a decision. I knew Evan Almighty was not something I wanted our family to see and I was disturbed that Christian radio stations were airing commericals for it. I emailed them and all they could say is all the other Christian venues are supporting it. Well you know what came to mind...if all your friends jumped off a cliff would you do it too?? Very disappointing.
Our second line of defense is in movie rentals. Our dvd and vcr have TV Gaurdian which you can program out the language. It is not help for violence or nudity. I really want the one that goes on your tv so that all language no matter that you are watching is filtered.
I know my children are disappointed sometimes by our standards but you let smut in and you get smut out. Someday I hope they will fully embrace the road we have chosen by choosing it for themselves too.

So many of the movies you guys mentioned you don't like we just love! We own almost all of those movies. I don't worry about my kids walking around farting just because they saw a movie where they were farting. The Wizard of Oz is one of my all time favorites. When I was a little girl I just couldn't wait for it to be shown that one time a year.

But like I said before we all have different opinions and it's all good! Different strokes for different folks!

What really bothers me more than just about anything else is when we are watching TV on a Saturday afternoon and all of a sudden there is a commercial or preview for a show or movie and they are half naked and crawling all over each other. Why on earth do they have to show crap like that at 2:00 on a Saturday afternoon?????? Nudity and sexual content is my one very very big no no for my kids.

I whole heartily agree with you. It is rare that we would be watching tv on a Saturday unless it is PBS. Occassionally we will watch something and I will have to have the remote in my hand and be watching too so I can switch channels real fast.
