I hesitated to put my favorites on here, but here goes, Betsy Wetsy, Chatty Kathy, Bobsey Twins book and one year my grandma got me my very own leather bond Bible.
Did anyone have a Tressy Doll? I loved mine. Her hair would grow and you wound it back in with a little key in her back. She was about Barbie size. Beth
How about Dollikins? They were sort of a knock off of Barbie for the folks that couldn't afford the real thing. We had this and loved them. I also remember getting a "Jennifer" doll one year and it was so neat because at that time my name had not become popular. Jennifer
Ohio Grandma, I had Chatty Cathy and so did my little sister. We played with them forever! One Christmas we both got green banana seat bicycles with the big handle bars and the weather that Christmas was warm enough for tee shirts. We had a blast! Beth
Patty, that's a sweet story! We had Christmases like that too. We had hardly anything a lot while I was growing up. One year my dad was out of work, so we had nothing. We couldn't even afford the bus fare to get us to and from school, so we hadn't been going. The teacher in the classroom I was in (I just LOVED her!!!) came by one time (we couldn't afford a phone either) to see why we (my brother and sister and I) weren't coming to school. A few days later the school's winter break started, and she came with some presents they had gotten and the tree from the classroom! My dad cried then too! I don't remember what the gifts were, but I remember the thoughtfulness and caring behind what she did!
Did anyone have Mousetrap? We drove ourselves crazy trying to make that little basket stay ballanced. I think they still make that game don't they? Beth
I loved Mousetrap!!! Yes, that basket took up most of the time just trying to balance it. It was a neat game.
Yes I did my girls were playing it yesterday after school. They love to her the buzzer go I think when I do it.
My girls have that game too. My little sister had that when we were little and it is just as much fun now. Beth
Really showing my age now but one gift I got as a teenager was a polaroid camera. It was the first one I had ever used and everyone loved it. My daddy thought it was so cool. He wasted film like crazy! Even the neighbors were facinated with it. I still have the big clunky thing somewhere. And lots of the pictures I made with it are still around here. You had to coat the black and white ones with something to keep them from fading and boy did it stink! I think I was about 13 or 14 that year. Beth
I got a Poloroid camera one year, too. The one that you could peel the picture off. I think it was a "trimprint".
Operation, OHHH! I loved Operation. I bought my sisters one with my allowence long ago. I got it for $5.00. I see it in Target now for $15.00. I wonder if it costs much more for them to make or if they just make a huge profit. I really enjoyed that game. Everytime the buzzer went off I would scream because it surprised me. You think I would have known what would happen but it got me everytime. Patty
Any Barbie addicts from the past out there? I had the original Barbie and so did my sister. Wish I still had my Barbies to show my girls. I had the Ken with the fuzzy hair that eventually rubbed off. Later I had a dark haired Ken whose hair was plastic and painted on. He was a hunk! I had Midge and Alan, Skipper and Scooter, and all the junk that went with them. We had a car and a boat but it may have been my sisters. I can't remember. Such fun memories. Beth
I had the Barbie RV. I had lots of Barbies, but no Ken or the others. My mom (who died when I was 4) and my granddad made my sis and me a huge wooden doll house that we played with our Barbies in. It was so big we could sit in the rooms (when we were 3). I think my dad might still have that dollhouse out in his shed. I need to get it out and fix it up for my girls.
Major Tom-Boy Alert >>> The absolute best toys in the world were: (Not sure all are available today, sorry) 1. Domino Rally (Plastic colored dominoes that you preped for knocking down. I was FAMOUS in my apartments for being the only kid to have this on the day after christmas 1981. (Mostly because me and all the other kids were just kids of poor folks) You could do more with it than just knock over dominoes! 2. Cliffhangers (Car Race Track) This again made me pretty popular, as it was the first car race track that utilized magnets to allow the little cars to do tricks and ride up the wall. Man! That was aweseome! 3. Play-Dough - Ok, is there ANYTHING that has that same WONDERFUL aroma as Play-Dough? 4. Sony Walkman (Today the kids, they call it "I-Pod" Hahaha!) I actually remember being in 9th grade science with my earbud in my ear. Those cassettes were so cumbersome. But I was attached at the ear to my Sony Walkman. So I can now recall every lyric, inflection and theme of every song on the Metallica "Master of Puppets" album! But, no CLUE on what happened in science class...... 5. Atari 2600 I was a video game junkie! Go FROGGER!
We didn't have alot of money when I was a child. I never had a Barbie, but I had a Tammy doll. She didn't have the hinged legs like Barbie and when I sat her down her legs went out - not straight out. I still had a lot of fun with her. My girlfriend and I made Barbie/Tammy houses with cardboard boxes - I still have scar on my finger from cutting out a door way. We had loads of fun.
