This morning as I am watching Good Morning America, they had a segment anouncing that a concert by "Hanna Montana" would be performing. The host of GNA was speaking with a few of the girls that were waiting to see her and he spoke to a group of girls, MAYBE 10 years old (MAYBE!) and this is what they were wearing: silver sequined TUBE TOPS ( a la street walker! ) with white super short shorts!!! Maybe it is just me, but I wanted to throw a cover over them!! Thank goodness dd was still sleeeping! I let dd dress "in style" within reason and with my approval as I make sure clothing is modest and appropriate for my 6yo. It is just sad to see how this country encourages sexualization of children at such and early age!!:(

The parents of those children are to blame. My daughter loves Hanna Montana and even I like the show. Her songs are very positive too. Hanna Montana does NOT dress as those children were dressed - ever. I didn't see GMA but from what you described it sounds very bad. I read yesterday she has a clothing line coming out in Walmart soon. It isn't Hanna Montana who is encouraging the sexualization of those children - it is the parents of those children. Obviously the parents didn't have a problem with the way those kids were dressed.

It is SOOOO SAD!!! I hate seeing that.

I was at my Dad's yesterday - my one "niece" was over. She's just turned 10 in March....she was wearing LIPSTICK and eyeliner yesterday. LIPSTICK AND EYELINER AT 10!! Her mom was encouraging it!!!

She's not really my sister, my older sister's best friend who we've kind of pseudo adopted b/c her mother died when she was very young and her dad just recently died. She's at every family function and we care deeply for them.

My daughter (7) and I have talks. I'm so strict I don't let her wear bikini's (not so much b/c her body is tempting NOW...but if she wears them now, she may wear them later when her body IS tempting). And when we go clothes shopping and she tries on a shirt, if she raises her hands over her head if I can see her tummy, we don't get it (or keep it if it's a hand me down). Also, she wears those skirts that have the shorts underneath - skorts? Because I won't allow her to wear short skirts. LOL :D

It is SO TRUE...it is a parent's job to be a parent and set the limits and the boundaries. That's what I feel saddest for when I see little girls dressed that way, is that THEIR PARENTS are not being parents and putting their foot down about how they are dressed.

    :(

Ok- so I had to look up who she was.

On the show it says she portrays, "the normal average teenage girl"...who of course, "lives with her father because her mother is dead". Can there possibly BE a show where there is a mom and dad. Now that's a shame!

MonkeyMama- I agree- Yes, the parents are the ones to blame! Until they are 18 the parents are responsible...obviously there are several parents who don't give a hoot about anything.

kbabe -I do not like to see girls wear makeup either! The eye liner is so dark! I don't even wear makeup but that's a choice, if it's light for special occasions that's one thing. I do the same thing!! If my children can raise their hands over their heads and I see their belly button, the shirt goes out the door!

I have a daughter that is 2. I have noticed that even the clothes for her are short shorts and skirts that show her diaper. It's so frustrating!

Agreed, we are super strict about clothing too. Nothing that shows too much. . .no two piece bathing suits, and nothing that says something on it that I don't approve of. No "I'm a diva" shirts or I'm a spoiled princess shirts. . .none of it. ;-) I will also not let my kids wear certain brand name clothing either bc I have deemed the brand too ghetto and to be associated with how people dress here or because it is associated with the Banana Republic line. (So no gap, etc.) Yes--I have banana issues LOL.

lovinhomeschool: my uncle works at my mom's store and just threw away some short shorts like you mentioned above for little girls, he didn't want to even put them on the rack. and its a shame that a lot of the clothes out there are presumtious that all girls are skinny.

However, my kids do watch the Hanna Montana show and I havn't really watched it but I peek a little and think its funny that Billy Ray Sirus is there and thats his real daughter... and some of the guests stars are from way back when! (the kids were watching an old episode of Ma'ma's family and thought it was hysterical and a day or two later the "mama" was on there-- Vicky Lorance and they were shocked when I told them it was the same lady----- also Saw Dolly Pardon on there the other day).

When Jeannie is 11 or so I plan to take her somewhere to be taught how to apply makeup. Less is more, I say, and a professional will teach her to look good, not trampy.

Me, I always look like I've been in my mom's makeup!

Wow 11? That's really young. No make up at our house until at least 16. (DH's orders. ;-) No ear piercings until 16 either. But I don't care if they do nail polish. What's funny is that the smell gives dh a headache so it is a blue moon when we get to do nail polish.

But I totally get where you're coming from.

    You sound like us!;)
Ems cannot wear any short skirt unless they are skorts. Even then, they still have to be so long. She can't waer bikinis either. Even if our children aren't trying to dress skimpy, we do have many perverted minds in this world that look at children as a sex object. It is scary and sickening.

MonkeyMama, I agree with everything you said!

Nellie, I was curious about the families after reading your post, so I looked at the Disney Channel lineup. Most of the sitcom and cartoon families that they are currently showing are 2 parent households. The Suite Life has divorced parents, and Hanna Montana has a deceased mom (occasionally played by Brooke Shields). I have to give Disney kudos for having so many families where the parents are still married.

My biggest objection to some of these shows is how some of the kids on certain shows talk so disrespectfully and how they encourage kids to grow up too fast with pre-teens and young teens dating sooo early -- not necessarily with clothing (though some of the high heals on the teens are scary). We really monitor the shows to see if we need to turn them off or to talk about something. At this point, we haven't any problems with Hanna Montana, though.

We are in a sub~tropical climate & sometimes it seems like everyone dresses skimpy except us. The girls are really uncomfortable with the available swimwear (because we have the same sort of modesty rules the rest of you seem to adhere to) & have opted for broadshorts & rashies a la surfies. We get some strange looks & stranger comments, especially from my family, but the girls are modest & feel comfortable when they swim. As for the other skimpily dressed bodies, they have learnt to guard their eyes, though seriously, if people knew how kids saw them they might think twice about their choices. We'd gone into the city for the day & were taking a short cut across the park when we stumbled on a topless sunbather. My then 3 yr old commented on her 'poached eggs frizzling round the edges'. (mummy tends to burn things when she cooks). We laughed it off but none of us are very comfortable with the oceans of flesh people seem to see no need to cover up any longer. I figure no~one needs to see what we've got.

I just took my daughter yesterday to buy a swimsuit. How sad that there were few choices in the one-piece selections. My dd8 really wanted a tankini, but the camp she's attending only accepts one-piece. I was thrilled to not be the only enforcer.
We also have the rule about no skin showing if hand raised. My MIL did give me the great idea of putting tank tops under a short shirt to lengthen it's life span.
We do allow her to paint her nails clear or light pink. Nothing else. I never wear make-up, so we'll have to learn together when she's of suitable age.
She does love Hannah Montana, and we frequently watch it together. I have made advantage of any questions it brings up for her. For example, she wanted to know if she had to kiss boys when she got older. I told her the only kissing is for her husband. She then asked if she had to get married, because kissing "wasn't her thing". LOL
Too bad I can't keep her that innocent forever.

You do knwo that "Hanna" is Billy Rae's daughter don't you? also he is supposedly a Christian , good clean type guy, I like his songs canya tell?

and regarding tankinis, some re very modest, my dd has a long trunk and the one peices cover less of her than her tankini does, so we went ahead and bought one. they make the legs go up so high on kids suites and the older , womens sizes are worse so we looked in girls sizes cause she fits them. Still they dont cover her body in proper ways, but at least the tankini covers her uppper body and the shorts that come with it cover the lower areas that a girl needs to keep covered.
It looks sporty and cute to

I wanted to make it clear that I do not allow my dd to go around anywhere but in the water with her suit either, and then as she gets out the towel goes on her.
We have always been a modest family, I have only one of my two sons who will go out with no shirt because he just gets too hot.
Skirts are below the knee, there are many cute ones that length too! and dd is very modest herself , she does not want to attact boys yet because she wants to be a true sweet sixteen on her 16th birthday.
I am glad that I thought to share that with her, how I tried but didnt quite make it, 6 months away I allowed a boy to kiss me! prior to that I fought them off litterally fist and foot!
She thought that was cool so she has decided boys are gross untill she is 16,
We also are not into make up, I just recently at 13 allowed her to wear colored nail polish.
She makes the coodinated with her outfits too.
Today she is wearing orange and someone had given me an orange color sparkles years ago so I let her have it , she put it on! so shes at the library doing her volunteer work with orange glittery nails.
I think the way we teach our girls today will change the world as we know it.

Scholar - We don't have cable so I wouldn't know about those channels, only the ones we've got and I was also refering to all the movies that come out.

"I think the way we teach our girls today will change the world as we know it." Yes! I agree. Teacher Mom:)

Sneak -Yep here too, no makeup, earrings etc until 16. That is if they still want to. It will also be basic makup, no black death eyeliner.

My girls wear tankini's, no they aren't as long as I would like, but I haven't found anything else right now. I would like to find some that were like t-shirts but out of swim material, and shorts to match.

As far as me I like this, it comes with bottoms that are a swim/skirt:

    NOT THIS:
    http://www.target.com/gp/detail.htm...-8699007?ie=UTF8&frombrowse=1&asin=B000MIX2IM

All this talk about girls...as far as the boys go, absolutely NO DROOPING PANTS!

Nellie, try 'rashies'. Sorry, have no idea what you guys call these but they are the tops surfers wear out here. There are cut like a long t~shirt & made of swim material. Out here you can get shorts made out of the same stuff but we just wear broadshorts. I do know there are 2 modest swimwear outlets on line with really pretty & modest stuff but I have lost the links. You could try googling (I love that word.)

Nellie - The sagging pants is the thing I hate most in life!!!!! Hate, hate, hate it!!!!!! Did I mention I can't stand it?? That is the most disgusting thing ever.

Yes I do like Hanna Montana. We dont' have cable but do have the DVD. I also took both girls to see her in concert in March. She was really good. I even listen to her CD in the car sometimes.

Swimwear - Both of my kids have bikinis but they also have tankinis and one pieces. Samantha just bought a really cute leapord print and pink bikini with a skirt and I think she looks adorable in it. I wear bikinis too. The camp she just got back from allows two pieces but the one we are going to in July only allows one pieces. I have a one piece from when I was a lifegaurd and I'll have to pull that out to go to camp. And possibly try to find another one that fits me right. I have scoliosis pretty bad and it is sooo hard to find a one piece that fits my back right.

My girls also wear skorts. As far as the length of the skirts it has never been an issue. Samantha likes all kinds of things but she doesn't want to look trashy. She hates people like Britney Spears! If she sees someone that looks like that she cringes.

Makeup/nail polish - I allow Samantha and Grace to wear light (I mean really light) pink lipgloss/lipstick and sometimes (like to the Hanna Montana concert) I let her wear very light pink eyeshadow. Never in a million years would I let her paint herself up like a hussy or wear eyeliner. No other makeup is allowed until she is 16. Both girls polish their nails and we have a wide selection of colors. They usually wear pink or purple. They don't even ask to wear red.
