I ALWAYS make my girls raise their arms over their heads. I do not like to see this. While at the park last week there were two young girls (prob 5 & 7) wearing bikini's playing on the equipment. BTW there is no pool at that park.
My oldest daughter had a terrible time with the dress code in high school. Not the standards of it but how they measured the outfit. Instead of measuring x amount of inches above the knee, the shorts or skirt had to be x amount below the fingertips. My poor daughter is cursed with my long arms so she would constantly get stopped for things that looked totally appropriate on her and girls that looked like "hoochie mamas" could get away with less because of the standards. I am a blue jeans and tshirt person and was even in high school. I would only wear eyeshadow and mascara because my glasses are so thick I wanted to bring out my eyes. My birthmark is so large and dark that it was not worth the effort on a daily basis to bother with. My sis under me, Beth A, is like me in that regard. Okay, go to the 3rd child who would not be caught in public without a full makeup job. Guess who had crows feet by the time she was 30! Fast forward to my kids - my oldest rarely bothers with any makeup and my 3rd spends hours in front of the mirror before we can go out. We have told her time and again that she looks fine without it and the damage it will do in the long run but that is her. As far as bathing suits go, I do not like them too revealing on the little girls. I have had to compromise with Joyce simply because her torso is so long that if I buy her a one piece to fit in the length it won't cover her backside! We try to find either a tankini or modest bikini which can be found. I finally got her to buy a pair of shorts that aren't basketball shorts! She is such a tomboy that I don't think I'll have to worry about the skimpy clothes!
It just proves that there is no "ONE" standard that could possibly be "Right" for every family. I remember being in school and being sent home because my shirt was a cut off shirt. Not the belly, but that the sleeves had been cut off. This was in the mid 80's, in Texas, SOUTHERN Texas in AUGUST,,,,, But at our school that was a HUGE deal to not have clothing that was torn or ripped in anyway....... geeesh... I went home to change, but not into a more "Appropriate" shirt. I changed into my PJs and stayed home. haha!
No, Jen, that won't cut it! I've seen too many teen boys with pants falling down to below the hips and their boxer shorts sticking out! You just want to come along behind them and yank their pants up FOR them!!! And some of the TIGHT suits on the GUYS at the pool!
Me too. I think the skirt is cute, but the shirt could be lower to meet the top of the skirt. That would be my complaint if it were my daughter.
wow, what a hot topic this has turned out to be! Must confess I didn't read all the posts - about the first 3 pages only........ I commented last year to one of my cousins about the inappropriateness of her 10 y.o. daughter wearing makeup (lots of it), and was promptly informed by the Dad that she had to learn how to apply it now so she didn't look cheap later!!!! What about now, I ask? Have any of you seen 'secret keeper girl'? It is a great package that facilitates discussion about modesty, and true (inner) beauty between mums and daughters. My dd loves it, and it helps that she values modesty too - it means that I don't have to be 'the enforcer' http://www.parable.com/familybookstore/item_9780802431219.htm I am sure you could find it a million other places, and I notice that Dana Ganesh is touring over there - lucky you (sigh) http://www.purefreedom.org/
Oh Jen, that's horrible. Just wanted to send hugs. You are right about the girl...very pretty, but not very modest
Jen...I am sorry to hear of your bad experience. From the picture...and your description of the girl's underwear showing, I would say her look is inapproaite. I would perfer all underwear to be covered and her shirt to come down to meet her skirt. I don't mind the shirt that says cute so much or that it is a tank. The skirt looked cute..not short or anything...but needs to cover her underwear. Just my opinion.
When I was still teaching first grade at a Christian school, I pulled one of my students aside to have her change into her gym pants as her skirt was too short. She promptly unrolled the waistband three times and said "now it's not". Upon further investigation, I learned she had the skirt long when mom dropped her off, but had rolled it up in the bathroom. First grade!
Aussie, I put the link for purefreedom, too! I went to a workshop at our homeschool conference and it was referenced. Have you used her book then? I was looking at it at the conference, even before I went to the Modesty Workshop.
