I had Jeannie make a crab because we're from Maryland, that's all. Deena chose Chinook, the dog based on where she's from, if memory serves.

Sure, someone else can do a 'send it all around' Stanley project . I just want Jeanne to have faster results. Notice Deena said Chinook was gone 8 months. In 8 months this project will be a memory!!

Has anyone read Chadwick the Crab books? They are stories about this crab, and they're full of references of things around here. The Chesapeake Bay, the Eastern Shore, etc.
That's kind of where I got the idea for her to make a crab.

I think your idea for making something unique to your area is a fun one. I just told the kids about Jeannie's project and they want to do one with a cyotee.(after rattle snake was rejected) but we aen't ready to do that yet, just talked about it, we need to go to the library and get the flat stanly book and discuss it more.

Becky, the rock samples we sent were quite abundant. The kids had so much fun picking them out for her, and they even had a rock lesson when Mac told them what kind of rocks they were.--I wouldn't feel bad about your rock experiment. I think we all love helping you in your most creative experiments.

    This sounds so cool!

I would love to participate (be sent a Flat Stanley). It would be so great for my kids to do somestuff around OUR area and see this done before we do it...it would help them catch a fever.

Then, hopefully, in return, we could send our our flat stanley's to you?

We are in PA, just north of Philadelphia, so there is A LOT around here.

    :) THANKS!

When my kids (Zach and Lindsey) did it....they did a "flat Lindsey" and "Flat Zach".

My dd is going to make hers next week. We'll have it ready to go and be thinking of how to do this.

Since Crystal is layed up with the sprained ankle, I think we will make some next week too. However at 13 I don't think she will like the idea of a "flat" Crystal! Okay that was mean. But she will never know! Beth

Beth, you gave me a laugh over that last post! I have a sis Beth and that sounds exactly like something she would come out with! Btw, I have a sis Becky, also so it is neat to see familiar names pop up.

This sounds good for older students, too. If I am understanding right, each family will send Becky one flat person or animal for Becky to send out all together to each location with Jeannie's crab. Each recipient family takes a picture(s) of the group of "flats" (or individual "flats," if they prefer), adds anything else of interest for each participant, and sends the package back to Becky. Then Becky sends it to another family. We could each enclose some stamps to help with postage, when the package comes to us.

Becky, I foresee that you will have some organizing to do. If we each enclose postcards or mementoes from our area for each of the others, you might end up having to either file them for all of the rest of us until the end & send them as packets back to the owners, or else send smaller packets back from each "trip" out. It sounds like a lot of work on your part, but it also sounds like fun education! Count us in!

OK, here's another idea. We could each write our address on our "flat." Then, when the packet from Becky arrives, we could do whatever we had planned, take pictures, etc. and make up packets ourselves for each of those addresses enclosed and send them directly to the owners. Of course, the "flats" would go back to Becky with the crab, to be sent to the next location. It seems like this would save Becky some work, but we'll participate whichever way you decide.

Like I said, I'm not sure how it's normally done, but her lessons say this-

    make a flat 'whatever'

    send it to someone

they take it somewhere in their town and take a picture of it. they can also write a short blurb about the area.

they can also just send a pamphlet of some kind.

then they send the 'whatever', the picture, and the blurb/pamphlet home.

Our project is more short term than what everyone's talking about.

Becky, I hope all our ideas haven't gotten too confusing for you. I think your Flat Stanley project is like the one my son and daughter did in public school. You send him or her to one person, in our case an uncle for my son and a cousin for my daughter, and that person takes Stanley around, makes pictures, maybe some small items from the area, writes a little letter about their adventure and sends Stanley home. Am I close? I would like to do this again. My youngest has never had a chance and she would love it. I can host as many Flat Somebody people as anyone wants to send but not all at once. I would be afraid I would mix them up or lose somebody's Flat person. I hope I got at least part of the idea right this time. No matter what, thanks for reminding me of this fun activity. Beth

Yes, I was thinking Becky was going to do her project according to the lesson she and Jeannie are working on. Just seding it to ONE person for a short time and having it sent right back to her. Then the rest of us can do it the way we want to. Right?

I think we can do it either way. If you don't want to make one, then you can just let "whoever" know that you will "host" one.

We would like to do both. Send one and Host one.

Since Becky's is specifically send to one and they send it back, and short term, someone else could do the kind where they send a stuffed animal or whatever they choose to someone and they send it to the next person, etc. But it can be flats if you want.
