I'm listening to it, too, Jackie. There is something BIG very close by. It growls and fusses every once in a while. Unfortunately it is hiding behind the camera somewhere and I haven't seen it. (pouting...)
We saw them too! Are those ducks that are making all the noise? We saw two of them walking around the edge of the water hole. Geese maybe?
I wonder how close it is to the equator? Maybe that's why it's so light so early. And South Africa would be in the Southern Hemphishere, so the days would be almost at their longest. My kids are fascinated, especially when they saw the zebras. Perhaps we can set up some kind of viewing schedule...maybe have different families check it regularly every 10 minutes for an hour, and then at the end of the hour post each interval and what it was (if anything) they saw....? Those of us on the East Coast could be "up" earlier in the day, and those on the west coast could be watching later.....? We could start another thread just for the "recording" of data, and see if there were any particular times that were especially active. We should record the time according to African time, rather than our own local time.
South Africa is a long way south of the equator. I'll bet they have really long days in their summer, though, Jackie. Here is the website belonging to the Game Preserve that the camera is on: http://www.sabisabi.com/ I like the idea of having people post what they see on a special thread! Our schedule is pretty odd, though, so I don't know if I could sign up for a consistent time.
We saw the zebras too! Now we hear birds, but don't see any or any animals. I'll be a west coast watcher!!!
I think the dial-up is just too slow. I get a great clear pic, but it seems that nothing changes. I hit refresh a couple of times, but still nothing... We have a coffee shop on the town square few blocks form here with hi-speed internet. I may have to take the kids for ice cream, so we can hook up there!
It's like that sometimes, Pam. I thought it wasn't working right, and then all of a sudden it zoomed it and started moving around until it focused on the zebras. I think it either does a slow scan on a regular basis, or it's motion-sensitive or something. Or I wonder if there's people that check it every so often and remotely scan the area......?
Freddy watched it with me for a while last night when the zebras were there and he thinks someone is monitoring it because it moved and followed the zebras when they moved and scanned the area after they left. I love watching to see what is there. Beth
We were thinking they have it set up for movement. It's a kind of motion detection. If you watch the shadows, you someties can see a pole of somekind with the camera (we think) on it.
Sometimes it goes in a 360 degree movement and you can see stuff attached to a tree. You can also see what looks like a dead animal on the ground. I didn't point that out to my girls. Beth
It seems to be a tall dead tree that they have the camera attached to. They looked down once last night while we were watching, and, as sloan127 said, you could see the equipment attached to it. We could see the shadow of it when the sun came out, too.
Last night after the kids went to bed, dh and I were watching it. The camera zoomed in on some vultures tearing up and eating something. I think either someone is there running the camera at times, or how would they know those vultures were there to zoon in to? OR it was set up---someone tossed the meat out, then they remotely zoomed in. I dunno, maybe I'm way off... It was interesting, nonetheless! We could see the shadow of the dead tree that the camera is attached to also.
Deena, Was the thing they were eating near the water or behind the tree where the camera is mounted? There is something that looks like a dead animal on the ground behind the tree a little ways. This is so interesting. Beth
Sometimes I think they run a pictue and it isn't live, also. Earlier today, I noticed there was NO SOUND AT ALL, which I thought strange. Usually, you'll hear the birds, or the crickets at night, etc. So I thought maybe it was actually turned off for a bit.
I didn't have any sound for a while either. Isn't it neat how the sounds change when it is dark there? It gets so loud!
Many times cameras like that are equipped with motion sensors that zoom in when there is motion. Just like a motion sensored light like some may have on their homes.
