I worked with a lady who shopped Macy's red dot clearance and never spent over 5.00 for any one piece. She also shopped Toys R Us sat the end of the seasons, and regularly got shirts and pants for as low as .50 each. She'd actually call and ask what the percent off was that week!

Right now we shop mostly at the secondhand stores, we just can't afford to buy whole new wardrobes every season.

I get plain jeans for $3 at the Treasure Store (I LOVE how you call it that!) and then we decorate them with rhinestones and patches from the craft store. They have the cutest iron-ons nowadays! I also get plain tees when they are on sale and we decorate them with iron-ons and rhinestones. My DSD loves helping to make her clothes, and she'll tell anyone and everyone that she made the shirt she is wearing! She loves that it is unique and no one else would have one just like it. A few tee shirts she outgrew so I cut the design part off and I'm saving them to make a tee shirt quilt.

Quite often my DSD's mom likes to "accidently keep" the clothes we get her and if we're not careful our nice wardrobe will end up over there and we won't have nice clothes at our house. (She likes to return our clothes when DSD has outgrown them.) Having a unique wardrobe keeps her from being able to claim she bought something! She's been caught a few times when I've said "you couldn't have bought that, DSD and I made that together."

    Hee!

Can I insert a gripe about women's clothes?
I love tank tops. My gripe is, most let your bra show under your arm! Lane Bryant and I scrapped not long ago, because I ordered tank tops that, on the model, went up under her arms nice and close. In reality, they hung way down. I was so ticked. Why don't they make the arm openings not so low?

cause they expect you to wear something under it, but also if you think of it, the kids dont care any more when thier bras show, guys show their underwear on purpose girls wear stringed tanks with bra straps, oh man we would not have been caught dead with a bra strap showing! YIKES, back in my day we didnt even want to admit we wore them! lol

LOL...I've noticed that, too. However I don't like for my upper arms to show unless I'm in a bathing suit, so I only wear tanks underneath something else.

MY big gripe with plus-sized clothes...why are the darn sleeves so long? Have you noticed that with long-sleeved shirts? I mean, they hang completely over my hands unless I roll them up. I wish designers understood that being bigger around doesn't equal having amazon-length arms.

As I get older. (Can't believe I am admitting this)...

I am starting to appreciate the wisdom behind arranged marriages, and burkas...

(My teen aged self, just fainted)

It is so true how your perspective on clothing changes from when you were a teen to when you have teens!

It is also interesting how a man perspective changes when he has a daughter. I lost 15 pounds about 6 months ago and I am holding at my new weight and am fitting comfortably into some older clothes. I tried on something on I had not been able to wear for over seven years and I looked good in it. It is very conservative in cut, but it is a leopard print dress. When I turned around I saw my husband just shaking his head and then he said "You're not a babe anymore, you're a mom."

I am still wondering why I cannot be both.

Thats just not fair! not once have i walked into a shop here in the u.k and found halloween outfits for kids of that age! in the u.k its just "not cool" to go trick or treating at that age i think.
but not in my daughters (12) eyes. she loves halloween and would gladly dress up for the day even if she were to just sit in the house.
we cant buy any outfits in the store so we make hers.

re the general thread, we started to make our own dresses too for my girls. All 3 of my girls are still feminin and prefer dresses and skits to t shirts and jenes ect so i though if i cant find any nice ones cheep enough why not make my own.
there unique and special and have no brand names attatched.;)

The costume stores send out advertisement and I am floored by some of the costumes that are sold for young girls. I am talking french maids and fishnet stockings.

ROFL! I know it! no bra strap showing that was just awful! I can still remember my aunt fussing about my shirt (she babysat us) because the shoulders were off a bit and you could see a smidge of strap and she said 'no way, go change!' rofl. :) I put a spaghetti strap top on that I bought last year (impulse buy....tried it on at home and yikes, I can't go out in this....even in a strapless bra, I feel naked) well my daughter was saying it was gorgeous and I had to inform her of the bra strap rule! :D

You are both! You just have to believe it! :D That's all it is, the confidence to believe that you're hot enough to rock some socks off and then you have it! You've heard the song "one hot momma" right? :p

a couple of notes... as a teen I was all for a move (that didn't happen) to Saudi... I figured that the veil would hide the acne, and my eyes are definitly my best feature!!

    another note.
I have two older girls... when ds21 was in High school, low cut jeans, tiny tops and mini skirts were in....Tons of fights. Can't wear that. "but MOM! you bought it for me!" How come it looked ok when I bought it?

SO, being a genius. (wait, you will agree in a second) I came up with the zone rules.
    There are 3 zones.
    cleavage
    tummy
    legs
You can enhance ONE at a time. TWO looks a little off, and THREE is sleazy.
That is why sometimes that blouse is ok...what is on the bottom?
I also told the girls, in relation to their budding sexuality.
"you have great power. You must use your power for good and not for evil."

It is less of an issue with dd17. The style of the long layers and the walking shorts is much much easier to handle, but we still have mini skirts and cleavage...sooo
it is funny because dd21 goes for the cleavage the most, (she is 5'4") and dd17 does the legs. (she is 5'10")

I gave up on bra straps. We just buy the colored ones. (I still keep mine covered)
I remember my mom having a cow about the "flash dance" sweatshirts. (who remembers those?)

That zone idea is wonderful! When I was younger (around 18-21...when I met my dh) I had a loose/tight rule. If you wear a tight top you have to wear a loose bottom. If you wear a loose top you have to wear a tight bottom.
If you wore both items tight then you look easy, if you worse both items loose then you look like you're lost in a bag, lol (and 5 sizes bigger than you actually are).
    Tight jeans + loose fitting/shirt
    tight fitting shirt +loose pants

The only time I varied from that was when I went out on my first date with dh....I wore tight/tight and LOOK WHERE THAT GOT ME!!!!! rofl!

    WalMart

Okay Ladies, here is the story.......Walmart hired this guy to change the clothes because they wanted to offer better clothes than previously. Actually walmart has changed considerably since Sam died. If people would complain to the Home office in Bentonville Ark. Maybe that would help. I traveled the US last year going into Walmarts to do a job, and I learned ALOT. I do NOT work for wal-Mart!!! I do NOT allow my daughter to wear thier clothes. These clothes are at all the wal-marts. They are just like someone said earlier HOUCHY MAMA clothes. I was so shocked at the styles!! BUT.....everyone seems to complain, so why isn't wall-mart hearing these complaints????? I mean everywhere I went mothers were complaining about it. Anyway, I was told that the sales of clothes are not good now, so maybe Wal-Mart will change their clothes??? PLUS walmart competes against Target, (WHY??) so it is understandable that both have the same kind of clothes.

Meagans Mom (And 4 grown and gone boys)
