Tiffany and Jen live in the outside of Houston, where at not for sure.

No news on either one yet. If I know Tiffany and her dh they are grilling steaks and drinking beer and helping the neighbors out.

I am hoping today more power comes up and I get a hold of Tiffany... As soon as I hear I will let you all know.

They are two strong ladies and have there heads on I know they wouldn't do anything to put there lives or there families lives in danger. More then likely they are waiting for power and water like millions are in that area.

I think I heard that some areas on the outside of Houston may have power restored today, but the downtown area would likely be without power for a while. I'm not sure where I heard that.

I did see that one in four people in the area have power.

    We're thinking about you girls!!

wow, hey I was wondering, I guess it is amound of down fall in buckets etc but in Seattle we got rain consistantly a lot an dI did not hear of flooding like you do in other states... geographical quesiton here I guess but do you ever wonder why? Is it the type of typography?
The soil, I mean? Maybe Wa states months of rain dont add up because of what type of dirt is in it?
anyway glad to hear you are okay Kris, and I hope we hear from the other two soon!

Glad to hear that some have checked in and are fine. Still praying for many others. Crystal's friend that she went to the prom with last spring lives in Houston now. He and his family are fine. The people next door to Carlos' family had the roof blown off their home but nobody was injured. Carlos last spoke to a man from our church on Saturday at noon and then lost cell phone connections.

Just talked to another really good friend in Houston and they got power. Said she and her dh are going back to work on Thursday. Said they still don't have lights but have everything else, lost trees. Said the eye went right over them. But, they have double pane windows and sat through it. Other then that she sound good.

If I don't hear from Tiffany soon I am heading up there. So, girl you better call soon.

The eye passed over us. Really surprised we had no damage. Lots of trees down all over and a few buildings down. Their was lots of wind and lots of rain.
We got our power back on last night. Our generator worked great!! Yeah! No wasted food.
Thanks to the Dollar Store our pigs are set. They can't sell stuff in their coolers - so our pigs benefited!
Their are still thousands around us without power. They are working diligently to get things hooked back up - pray for these guys stamina! They will be busy for weeks!

I was hoping someone had heard from Tiffany and Jennifer. Hopefully they will have electricity on soon. Hope there's not much damage for them to contend with..

Sabrina, I'm glad you are ok and had no damage.

I don't know Tiffany, so can't help you there.

I do know JenniferErix --- haven't heard from her, but she should be fine. She lives about 15 miles from me and yesterday we were driving around her general area (about 3-4 miles of her house) and there was minimal damage --- trees down, power poles down, a few missing roofs, that sort of thing. She's in a big brick house... so I highly doubt there was any major damage.

We lost our skirting, our BBQ pit, and quite a few branches off the trees... that's about it. My dad had a large tree split right down the middle right by his house.... luckily, it fell AWAY from the house, or he'd have new greenery in his bedroom.

We're around 60-70 miles sw (guesstimate) of where the eye came ashore.

If anyone has access to our local channels here... I HIGHLY recommend watching it. There are around 3 million people w/o power & not anticipating everyone getting it back for 3-4 wks or even more.

There is NOTHING left on the eastern end of Boliver Peninsula. It looks as if someone took a giant broom and just swept it clean. If anyone has visited Galveston --- you probably know where Seawolf Park is --- well, the Battleship Texas is now COMPLETELY on land. Not run ashore a little... like it was picked up and set back down ON GROUND.

Those familiar with the seawall ...... The Balinese Room? - Gone. The ramp leading to the Flagship Hotel? - Gone. (Along with a few large chunks of the building itself). The Galveston Fishing Pier? - Gone. And --- to my husband's dismay --- the Hooter's is gone, too. *sigh* ANd that's just the tip of the iceberg.

They were 23 people hunkered down in one 3rd story apt on the West End. They got trapped Friday morning -- the 1st & 2nd floors flooded.

What's really bad is that they were told mandatory evacuations would begin Friday morning --- so the people out there spent Thursday packing up & securing things. But when they got up Fri morning, they were already trapped by the surge & nobody could (or would) go to rescue them -- a full 18 hours before landfall. They had a few choppers out picking up 2-3 at a time... but there were hundreds of people out there -- both in the West End & on Boliver. We had local 11 in our hotel room, and there were countless calls from residents out there on Boliver saying they were trapped & would have to ride it out.

I don't know how many got out ---- but anyone who didn't is dead. The land commissioner said today that they'd probably never even find anyone who'd stayed out there. They're organizing a "mobile morgue unit' to Galveston to store the bodies until they can be identified.

Thanks Laja for the update. We will be praying for the people of that area.

I also spoke to someone who's parents are in Houston. Their cell phones aren't working either...but they know they are safe. Hopefully the girls are just without cell phone power.

Laja, thanks so much for the update!

I can't possibly imagine the devistation down there. I had to quit watching the news on Sunday, because all I do is cry (probably hormones), and I think my kids thought I was losing it completely!

    Howdy, from Texas!

We FINALLY have power and Internet... But MANY MANY MANY people do not

I tried to call Tiff but still no answer.

    Here is the deal...
We lost our fence and power in the heat of the storm friday night.. Also we suffered roof damage, but I consider it nothing serious because we ar ein our home, unlike others...

One former member of my local homschool group lost her home completely and might be living with us for a while. She has 7 children, so pray for strength!

We are SW of houston and we got "Skirted" by the storm. But being without pwer or cell or internet, we had no wat to communicate.

Anyway, I want to make a major complaint... Here in Houston we had 3 million people without power, without food water and in some cases shelter... We have no gas, and the stations that do have gas have no power.. those that do have gass and power are over run by hordes of people...

FEMA and the Mayor of Hosuton got into a war of words about where the PODs are supposed to be Points of Distribution for ice water and MRE.s Meanwhile, the First responders, who where centrally located at the Tully Stadium had to beg for pot-a-potties and then came on TV to ask the public to come bring them food and water.... YEA....

    It is a mad house..
I refuse to leave the house, people are crazy...

So where is the NATIONAL news???
The Federal Gov would not let the news choppers have air clearance to fly over galveston because they did not want visuals ike with Katrina, of them plucking people off roofs.. If it didn't happen on tv, it never hapened, right? Ugh!

They rescued nearly 2000 people AFTER the storm from Galveston and a little east on Bolivar...

I gave you guys links in earlier posts in this thread for you to see the local news live, they should still work....

But you turn it on the national news and all you hear is Palin....

    Uhm.....
Did the world forget about us just because Bush is from here?

Have ya'll seen any news coverage? Is any news getting out??

Every single thing in the paper is about the hurricane and how people are trying to survive.. but it seems you wouldn't know it by national news. Nope we are just a side bar note...
    http://www.cnn.com/

    What's up with that????

    People trying to find gas..

    http://ktrk.typepad.com/abc13/2008/09/report-conditio.html

Lets explain that we are talking about an area of about 100 miles by 100 miles square that is affected. Try driving around to find gas in that amount of space with stations either running out of gas or without power.

Lines of cars stretched two hours or longer at Texas Southern University for packages of bottled water and bags of ice, the only supplies on hand until three 18-wheelers showed up around noon. Cheers broke out when it was announced there were boxes with chili, a small bag of Frito chips and a cookie.

"Why didn't they call for volunteers when they knew this was going to hit?" grumbled Irene Makris, who waited in line but was told to drive to a station in another part of Houston, closer to her neighborhood. "This is bull."

Snapshots of damage were emerging everywhere: In Galveston, oil coated the water and beaches with a sheen, and residents were ordered off the beach. Dozens of burial vaults popped up out of the soggy ground, many disgorging their coffins. Several came to rest against a chain-link fence choked with garbage and trinkets left behind by mourners.

Galveston officials guessed it would be months before the island could reopen, and warned that mosquito-borne diseases could begin to spread. Cows that had escaped flooded pastures wandered around a shattered neighborhood. An elderly man was airlifted to a hospital, his body covered with hundreds of mosquito bites after his splintered home was swarmed.

"Galveston can no longer safely accommodate its population," City Manager Steve LeBlanc said. "Quite frankly, we are reaching a health crisis for people who remain on the island."

I was wondering about the news coverage thing. It is amazing...they barely mention ya'll and your situation. Please pm me if there is anything you think we could do from down here in south Texas. My kiddos would love to do something to help..if only we knew how.

I don't know about that, thats all we are hearing on tv down here is Houston and area. But, you have to remember Houston is a big city over 3 million people thats alot of people to get help too. I think they are doing the best they can. Yes, I know if I was in there I would be yelling too. But, it's been on tv alot. Good Morning America, Today Show all had alot on there and live broadcast too. So, I they are broad casting it enough.

All I get from people is they are tired of turning tv on thats all they hear. It's on CNN hourly too. We watch in unfold from there.

I was talking to my girlfriend who lives in Houston and works there. I told her what her building looked like from down here because they had no tv. to see it and she couldn't get down town yet. So, it is on tv live. She told me there is alot of people to supply and get help too. It's a big area.
